Sony Reader Android and iOS apps launching in December

Sony will release its Android and iOS applications that compliment its Sony Reader devices in December, Sony has said on a new launch page for the apps. The Android and iOS mobile applications will allow anyone with a Sony Reader to read their purchased books on their iPhone or Android phone, in addition to their Reader device. We assume the software will also work with the iPod touch, and hope that an iPad edition is released as well. Sony's Reader apps will also allow you to buy new books, make bookmarks, notes, highlights, and even adjust the font. An exact date hasn't been announced yet, but we'll alert you when the apps go live.

Windows Phone 7 jailbreak tool allows you to sideload apps

A jailbreak-style application called Chevron WP7 has been released recently which allows anyone running Windows XP SP2 or newer to sideload their own applications onto Windows Phone 7 devices. Until now, it hasn't been possible for anyone to sideload apps onto WP7 smartphones, save for developers. While there's likely not a ton of content available for sideloading just yet, it could open the floodgates for applications that might not be approved by Microsoft in the future. The free application is available now. We haven't had a chance to try this out ourselves just yet; use at your own risk.

Nokia Ovi Suite 3.0 now in public beta

Nokia has announced that Ovi Suite 3.0, its latest synchronization software for Nokia smartphones, is now available for everyone to try. The free public beta offers a host of new features including a new Home view, an integrated music experience with Ovi Music, recommended apps and music, and more. To download the Ovi Suite 3.0 public beta software, head to Nokia's beta labs website.

Nokia 5800 receives firmware update with new browser, maps

Over two years have passed since we first reviewed the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, yet Nokia is still pushing out new firmware updates for the device - its first touchscreen equipped S60 smartphone. This latest update includes mostly minor adjustments, but does include a new version of the Nokia Web Browser and Ovi Maps. The update appears to be going out over the air on a carrier by carrier basis.

France Telecom eyes Iraq for Middle East expansion

France Telecom may take a minority stake in Korek Telecom in an effort to expand into Iraq and the Middle East, Reuters is reporting. "Iraq is an area of strategic interest for France Telecom and we are studying opportunities that could exist there," a France Telecom spokesperson told the Financial Times. A stake in Korek Telecom could be worth as much as $1.5 billion and Reuters said France Telecom may eventually own a controlling stake in the company. The number of wireless customers has reportedly tripled during the past two years to a total of 10 million consumers.

New leaked images of the Nexus S show the device running Android 2.3 "Gingerbread." While the Nexus S is not yet official, the shots further push the speculation that its announcement, as well as Gingerbread's release, could be imminent.

Sony launching new e-readers in Japan during December

Sony said today that it has intentions to launch its two latest e-reader devices in Japan during December. It will introduce the e-readers in Japan, the first time since it stopped selling them back in 2007. The two e-readers are the Reader Pocket Edition and the Reader Touch Edition, and Sony plans to make them available in 300 retail stores for 20,000JPY ($240) and 25,000JPY ($300) respectively. Sony also plans to offer 20,000 titles through a new digital bookstore. Sony announced the e-readers in September and they are available in Australia, China, Italy, Spain, and the United States.

Nokia Ovi Suite 3 beta available, integrates Ovi Store and Ovi Music

Nokia has released a beta version of its new Ovi Suite 3.0 for Windows PC users. The application features a new home screen with Ovi Store application recommendations, integrated music with Ovi Music, and a simpler installation process, among other things. Verizon BlackBerry Storm2 gets firmware update

It appears that Verizon and RIM have released an update for Verizon's BlackBerry Storm2 smartphone. The new update, called 5.0.0.1015, is available now from the Verizon Wireless website. The update promises improved voice quality, widgets from the V CAST App store, and other minor enhancements.

Windows Phone 7 now boasts 3,000 apps, 15,000 developers

Microsoft recently said in an official blog post that it will have roughly 3,000 applications available on its Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform by the end of this week. It also said that the platform has about 15,000 registered developers, which marks an 80 percent increase since September. Users can easily look for new apps from their desktop computers using the Visual Search feature of Bing.
