AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon create ISIS mobile payment joint venture

Today AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile announced the creation of a new joint venture called ISIS. ISIS' goal is to create a mobile payment network that will allow U.S. wireless subscribers to use their smartphones for mobile payments.

GE exec tapped to run U.S. wireless carrier mobile payment joint venture

An executive named Michael Abbott, who worked as a chief marketing officer with GE Capital, has been asked to lead a joint venture between Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and AT&T that will focus on a new mobile payment system.

LG sells 1 million Optimus One Android smartphones in first 40 days

Today LG announced that it has sold over 1 million of its new Optimus One Android 2.2 Froyo powered smartphones in the device's first 40 days on the market. The low-cost Optimus One is sold in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and in the USA (where it is known as the Optimus T for T-Mobile and the Optimus S for Sprint). The Optimus One features a large 1,500mAh battery, a half-VGA resolution touchscreen display, and comes in a variety of colors. LG says that the device will soon be available with 120 different carriers throughout the world, and that it expects the Optimus One to eventually be its first smartphone to break the 10 million mark in total sales.

Google Shopper v1.3 for Android updated with search filters

Google has released the latest version of its Google Shopper application for Android, version 1.3. Google Shopper 1.3 includes search filters for price and brand, which helps users find exactly what they're looking for while shopping. Google Shopper 1.3 also includes "featured lists" which is a list of products that are featured as suggested gifts or purchases. iPhone users can take advantage of the software by navigating to m.google.com/products. Google Shopper 1.3 is available for free in the Android Market.

Google CEO flashes Nexus S, talks of NFC and Gingerbread

Today at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, Google CEO Eric Schmidt showed what he called "an unannounced phone" for "an announced carrier" that appears to be what the rumor mill has labeled as the Nexus S. The phone was running on the T-Mobile network during the demonstration, and will likely be the first device to run on Android 2.3, also known as Gingerbread. Schmidt said today that Gingerbread would start shipping in a few weeks, and that it would feature support for Near Field Communications. NFC is a technology that promises to be important for contactless mobile payment systems.

Samsung Galaxy Tab hitting U.S. Cellular for $399 on November 19

Today U.S. Cellular announced that it will offer the Samsung Galaxy Tab,a 7-inch Android 2.2 Froyo tablet, on November 19. The Galaxy Tab will be priced at $599 without a contract, or it can be purchased for $399 after a $100 mail-in rebate and with a 2-year U.S. Cellular contract.

AT&T settles class action suit over collected data taxes and fees

It appears that AT&T has quietly settled a class action suit over allegations that it collected illegal taxes, fees, and surcharges from users of its mobile data services. According to mocoNews, some AT&T customers received text messages last week alerting them to the fact that a refund is coming their way. The suit alleged that the collection of those taxes and fees violated the Internet Tax Freedom Act.

T-Mobile and Garmin-ASUS have released the Android 2.1 update for T-Mobile's Garminfone. The update is available on T-Mobile's forums, but it's not being rolled out over the air. iTunes Ping social networking now available on iPad

Over the weekend Apple added Ping support to the iTunes application on the iPad. Ping is a social networking feature of iTunes that allows users to follow their favorite artists, discover new music, and more. It has been available on the iPhone and on the iPod touch for the past few months now. You should be able to access Ping on your iPad by opening the iTunes application and tapping the "Ping" tab.

AT&T now offering LG Quantum Windows Phone 7 device

Today LG announced that its first Windows Phone 7 device, the Quantum, is available from AT&T. The LG Quantum was announced in October and offers a 3.5-inch touchscreen display with an 800 x 480 pixel resolution, a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and more. AT&T Samsung Galaxy Tab launching November 21 for $650

Today Samsung and AT&T announced that the Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch Android tablet, will launch on AT&T for $649.99 on November 21. The device is available without a contract and can be used with a $14.99 pay-as-you-go plan which offers 250MB of data, or a $25 plan that provides 2GB of data per month. RIM pulls Kik messaging app from App World

RIM has reportedly pulled the Kik messaging application from its App World application market. According to Venture Beat RIM did not give an explanation for pulling Kik, an app that serves as a bit of an alternative to its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service. Kik works across multiple platforms, including Android devices and the iPhone, and provides fast messaging with received and read message confirmations. BBM is currently a more robust application, however, and it allows for group chats with photo sharing and more. Kik is fairly new, and may add those features in the future. RIM told Venture Beat it "could not elaborate," on its decision to pull the app.

The Verizon Wireless Fivespot is a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot that shares its 3G connectivity with other devices, or can be used directly as a USB modem. The device works on CDMA networks as well as the GSM/UMTS networks used outside of the USA.

Apple making surprise iTunes announcement tomorrow

Today Apple posted a message on its website which says "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget. Check back here tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes." Judging by the clocks posted on the same page, the announcement will occur at 10am EST/7am PST. There's speculation that the announcement could be a subscription music service, which will likely apply to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, if true. Perhaps it could coincide with an iOS 4.2 launch, too. We'll keep you updated tomorrow.

Motorola aims for January split

Motorola is planning to split into Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions in January, Reuters is reporting. In February, Motorola announced that it planned to split into two independently traded companies. Motorola's current Devices and Home businesses will separate and form Motorola Mobility. Motorola Inc., will become Motorola Solutions and it will house Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Networks divisions. Dr. Sanjay Jha will be the CEO Motorola Mobility division and Greg Brown will serve as the CEO of Motorola Solutions.

AMD joins Nokia, Intel on MeeGo project

Today AMD announced that it has joined the MeeGo project, a smartphone platform created by both Intel and Nokia that combines the technologies from Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo operating systems. The first devices to run MeeGo are expected to launch in 2011. AMD's role in the project remains unknown, but we'll keep you updated as more about its involvement is announced. MeeGo is expected to power devices ranging from smartphones to netbooks.

India orders Vodafone to pay $553 million deposit in tax dispute

The Supreme Court in India has ordered Vodafone to pay a deposit on alleged back taxes owed to the government after an $11 billion acquisition of Indian carrier Hutchison Essar.
