Clearwire cuts costs and staff, Sprint's 4G WiMAX plans remain unchanged

Today Clearwire announced that, in an effort to save funds, it is cutting 15 percent of its staff and delaying a CLEAR-branded 4G WiMAX phone. Sprint, which owns 51-percent of Clearwire, is currently in talks to possibly provide additional funding, and it says its 4G WiMAX roll-out plans remain unchanged.

Google Instant search hits Android and iPhone

Today Google announced that its Instant Search feature, which begins to provide search suggestions as you type in a search term, is now available at Google.com on iOS 4 devices and and on Android 2.2 smartphones. Google says there's a "Turn on" link just below the search bar that will let you toggle the feature on and off. Google Instant works best on 3G and Wi-Fi networks. "With Google Instant on mobile, we're pushing the limits of mobile browsers and wireless networks. You will probably notice a big improvement in speed when you search thanks to a new AJAX and HTML5 implementation for mobile that dynamically updates the page with new results and eliminates the need to load a new page for each query," Steve Kanefsky, a Google software engineer said. Additional languages and support outside the U.S. is coming "in the coming months."

Firefox mobile browser for Android, Maemo gets refreshed

Today Mozilla announced that its Firefox 4 Beta browser for Android and Maemo devices has been updated. The beta is now available in 10 languages and provides improved text rendering, reduced memory usage, and faster performance. The Android client install size was reduced by 60 percent to just 17MB, too. The latest version has a new theme, allows you to share links from the Site Menu, and undo closing a tab. Mozilla says the Android 2.2 client is 25 percent faster on its benchmarks. Hardware acceleration for zooming and scrolling, as well as support for HTML5 video, are planned for the future. Android 2.1 hitting Motorola BACKFLIP smartphones by November 9

AT&T announced today that the Android 2.1 update for the Motorola BACKFLIP will be available to some BACKFLIP today. The update will be available to 1,000 customers who volunteered through Motorola's forums. AT&T and Motorola will make the update available to all Motorola BACKFLIP smartphones beginning on November 9. There will be an upgrade tool on Motorola's website, and it will not be pushed out over the air. The process should take about 40 minutes.

Samsung hopes to sell 1 million Galaxy Tab units by end of year

Samsung, which is launching its Galaxy Tab Android tablet on all four of the major carriers in the United States, has said that it hopes to sell over one million units by the end of the year. According to The Wall Street Journal, Samsung will introduce the Galaxy Tab in South Korea next week on SK Telecom. "Various tablet sizes will be launched by many companies next year. In order to cement our strong presence in the tablet market, Samsung is also preparing other kinds of tablet devices," J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile business said. Sharp outs 3D Android smartphones for Japan

Today Sharp announced two new Android 2.2 Froyo smartphones that will launch in Japan, the Galapagos 003SH and the Galapagos 005SH. Both devices offer 3.8-inch touchscreen displays and come with 3D glasses for viewing media in 3D. The 003H sports a 9 megapixel camera and a 1GHz CPU while the 005SH has a 5 megapixel camera and a full QWERTY keyboard. The phones are capable of taking 3D pictures, too. The 003H is expected to launch in Japan on Softbank in early December, and a date for the 005SH was not given.

ITC to investigate Motorola's patent infringement suit against Apple

Today the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) said that it has voted to investigate a complaint filed by Motorola on October 6, 2010 alleging that Apple is infringing on its patents. The USITC said that it will set a target date for completing the investigation within 45 days. Motorola believes that Apple's iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch infringe on 18 of its patents. The patents involve MobileMe, the App Store, and WCDMA, GPRS, and 802.11 antenna design technologies. Apple countersued Motorola in late October, and claims that its smartphones are infringing on six of its patents relating to multitouch and operating systems.

LG Optimus S Android smartphone headed to Sprint on November 7

Sprint has announced that the LG Optimus S, a budget friendly Android 2.2 smartphone, will be available beginning on Sunday, November 7. The LG Optimus S offers a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 3.2MP camera, a virtual QWERTY keyboard, and can serve as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. The Optimus S will launch for $49.99 with a new two-year Sprint contract.

Verizon HTC DROID Incredible getting V CAST Apps next week

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it is updating the DROID Incredible next week. The update will include Verizon's V CAST Apps, the first Android phone with the V CAST Apps store. Skyfire pulls iPhone app, says it's sold out

Skyfire announced late last night that it had pulled the Skyfire application from Apple's iTunes App Store because the app "sold out." Skyfire said it had to halt sales in an effort to expand server capacity. Skyfire said that it will have a new "batch" of the apps available soon, implying that it will again pull the browser should its servers hit capacity. Skyfire for iPhone transcodes Flash content to HTML5, allowing users to watch Flash videos.

T-Mobile introducing new low-cost data plans on November 14

Earlier this week T-Mobile announced that it will introduce new mobile data plans: a 200MB plan for $9.99 per month with a 2-year agreement ($15 per month without one), and an unlimited data plan for $30 per month. Twitter update now available for Android users

Twitter has released an update for its official Android smartphone client. The update is free and offers an enhanced experience that is more consistent with other platforms. Improvements include a new layout of the tweet time line and a brand new tweet details page that is similar to the one already available on the iPhone, which allows users to easily reply, retweet, and click on links. Nokia C6-01 Symbian^3 touchscreen smartphone now shipping

Nokia has announced that it is now shipping the C6-01, a Symbian^3 powered smartphone with a large 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitative touchscreen featuring the new ClearBlack display technology. The device also sports an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording and more. Nokia indicates that the boxes are loaded up on vans and being shipped out to retailers and operators now.

The Samsung Galaxy S, an Android 2.2 powered smartphone that launched recently in Japan, has been nearly as popular as the iPhone. According to Fortune, it didn't quite outsell the iPhone, if you combine both the 32GB and 16GB models, but it did outsell both models respectively. In early October Samsung announced that it had sold 5 million Galaxy S smartphones globally, 2 million of which were sold in the U.S. It expects to sell as many as 10 million units.

Samsung Galaxy S is the first Wi-Fi Direct certified smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy S (GT-i9000) is now Wi-Fi Direct certified, and it's the first smartphone to get that label. The Wi-Fi alliance published the Wi-Fi Direct certification on its website earlier this week noting that the device's features have successfully completed the Wi-Fi Alliance interoperability testing. Wi-Fi direct allows two Wi-Fi Direct certified devices to connect, share, and sync with one another.

Apple issues support doc for iPhone daylight savings bug

Apple has issued a support document related to iOS 4.1 and the recent alarm clock bug which caused some Europeans to sleep in an hour late on Monday. Apple says "In some regions, shortly before or after the daylight savings time change, repeating alarms created in the Clock app may work correctly." The fix? "Set the repeat interval to 'Never'. You will need to reset these alarms for each day you need them." Apple notes that after the daylight savings time switch in the U.S., on November 7, you can switch your alarms to repeat again.

MetroPCS takes network nationwide

Today MetroPCS announced that its customers will be able to access MetroPCS services in "areas covering more than 90 percent of the U.S. population," with the carrier's new Metro USA nationwide service. "Consumers demand a better experience with more value without being tethered to an annual contract, which is why we expect the addition of Metro USA, at no additional cost, to make our wireless services more attractive," Roger Linquist, chairman, president and CEO of MetroPCS, said.

PayPal updates iPhone app to fix security issues

PayPal has updated its Apple iPhone application with a new version that fixes a security flaw, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The older version did not verify the authenticity of PayPal's website when a user was logging in, opening up the possibility for a hacker to gain access to user accounts. "To my knowledge [the flaw] has not affected anybody," PayPal spokeswoman Amanda Pires said, noting that if anyone was affected, PayPal would reimburse fraudulent charges.
