Today Verizon Wireless quietly launched the DROID 2 Global, an Android smartphone that has formfactor as the DROID 2, but which also offers support for global roaming. The device is available now for $199.99 with a new Verizon contract and after rebates.

Opera Mobile 10.1 beta for Android available now

Today Opera released its Opera Mobile 10.1 beta web browser for Android smartphones. The browser is free and provides pinch-to-zoom support, tabbed browsing, desktop sync with Opera Link, geolocation support, and more. Opera also says that browsing on congested networks should still be zippy thanks to its Opera Turbo feature which compresses data by up to 80 percent. Opera Mobile 10.1 beta is available in the Android Market now.

Samsung ships 3 millionth Galaxy S Android smartphone in U.S.

Last night at the launch event for the new Samsung Continuum for Verizon Wireless, Samsung Mobile's Chief Marketing Officer, Paul Golden, said that his company has shipped its 3 millionth Galaxy S smartphone in the United States. The aforementioned Continuum is the most recent addition to the Galaxy S lineup, which also includes the Fascinate, Vibrant, Captivate, and Epic 4G.

During a press event in New York City tonight, Samsung announced the Continuum, an Android powered Galaxy S smartphone that will launch on Verizon Wireless November 11. The Continuum offers two displays: a single 3.4-inch Super AMOLED screen and a secondary 1.8-inch Super AMOLED ticker display.

Today Samsung announced via its official Twitter account that the Continuum, a Galaxy S smartphone, will launch on Verizon Wireless on November 11. The device offers a 3.4-inch touchscreen display as well as a secondary 1.8-inch screen. The secondary "Ticker Display," can be used to display social network feeds, news, alerts, and more. Pricing has not yet been announced but we expect to hear more about the device during a press event tonight in New York City. Stay tuned for more details and a hands-on gallery.

According to Nokia's official Twitter account, the Nokia E7, will start to ship on December 10. The E7 is a Symbian^3 powered smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard, a 4-inch AMOLED display, an 8 megapixel camera, and more. Verizon Wireless testing $70 unlimited data and text package

Verizon Wireless has begun testing a new $70 monthly plan that includes unlimited data and text messages with 450 voice minutes. The plan is currently only available to a limited amount of customers that are enrolled in the test program.

LG Optimus Quantum WP7 smartphone available from Bell

Today Bell announced that it will offer the LG Optimus Quantum, a Windows Phone 7 powered smartphone. The Optimus Quantum is available for C$99.95 with a 3-year Bell contract, but can also be purchased for C$499.95 without a contract. Google sponsoring free Wi-Fi on domestic flights during the holidays

Today Google announced, through its Google Chrome team, that it will be sponsoring free Wi-Fi connectivity on AirTran, Delta, and Virgin America flights this holiday season. The Wi-Fi, powered by GoGo Inflight, will be available from November 20, 2010 through January 2, 2011 on domestic flights. GoGo Inflight Wi-Fi is available on more than 700 planes. Nokia assumes development control over Symbian

Today the Symbian Foundation announced that Nokia will once again assume development control of the Symbian platform. The Symbian Foundation will exist only as a legal entity in charge of licensing software and other intellectual property issues such as the Symbian trademark.

Today Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system is making its debut in the United States. AT&T and T-Mobile both launched their first Windows phone 7 devices today with the launch of the Samsung Focus and HTC Surround on AT&T and the T-Mobile HTC HD7 on T-Mobile. All three phones are available for $199.99 with 2-year contracts with their respective carriers. Our review of the HTC HD7 will was just posted. AT&T launches U-verse Mobile for Windows Phone 7

Today AT&T announced that it has launched its U-verse Mobile App for its Windows Phone 7 devices. U-verse Mobile costs $9.99 per month, after a 30 day free trial, and offers access to streaming and downloadable TV shows. For AT&T customers with U-verse TV, you can also schedule and manage DVR recordings from your phone. The app should be available in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

HTC rumored to be launching own app store

HTC may be working to launch its own applications store, the Financial Times is reporting. According to the FT, HTC has begun to hire new employees for the app store, which could be stocked with both e-books and applications. HTC plans to expand the staff supporting its new app store to as many as 100 employees around the world, although it will start with a much smaller Taiwan based group. The FT quoted two sources "with knowledge of the situation," but HTC did not comment specifically on a potential app store.

Samsung Continuum Android smartphone manuals posted on Verizon site

Verizon Wireless has posted user manuals (manual 1, manual 2) for the Samsung Continuum, a Galaxy S Android smartphone, on its website. The Continuum has a unique offering of two displays, a larger Super AMOLED one and a second and smaller one for displaying small amounts of data. Verizon Wireless and Samsung have yet to announce the Continuum, although we suspect the device will be announced at a Samsung launch event in New York City this evening which we'll be attending.
