| Gowalla teams with Disney for theme park check-ins Posted: 19 Nov 2010 05:00 AM PST Gowalla has announced that it has teamed up with Disney to provide badges for check-ins around Disney theme parks. There are now over 100 new stamps within Disney Parks, and Gowalla expects to add another hundred by the end of the year. Gowalla is a geo-location service that is similar to Foursquare in that you can use it to "check-in" to destinations. | O2 Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.1 update now available Posted: 19 Nov 2010 04:49 AM PST Today O2 announced that the Android 2.1 update for its Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphone is rolling out. O2 said that it should be "fully available," by this afternoon, which we take to mean that it will have been pushed out to all of the devices. | BlackBerry PlayBook landing in corporate hands Posted: 18 Nov 2010 11:27 AM PST RIM has begun distributing samples of its upcoming 7-inch tablet, the PlayBook, to some corporate users, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. While the tablet won't debut until early 2011, it appears a few tech executives are getting their first samples now. "I actually got my hands on the first unit today, and will get demo devices in December," Dave Codack, vice president of employee technology and network services at TD Bank, told The Wall Street Journal. TD Bank Financial Group and Sun Life Financial have both noted their intentions to order the tablet. Sun Life plans to use the devices to "facilitate enrollment in retirement savings plans," The Wall Street Journal said, citing an executive who found the device particularly attractive because of its security features. | U.S. Cellular starting Black Friday Android sale on November 22 Posted: 18 Nov 2010 11:17 AM PST Today U.S. Cellular announced that it is starting its Black Friday sale early, on Monday November 22. U.S. Cellular will be selling its Samsung Mesmerize, a Galaxy S phone, for $99 and the HTC Desire for $49 after $80 mail-in rebates. | Unlocked Palm Pre 2 available from HP today Posted: 18 Nov 2010 10:50 AM PST Today HP began selling an unlocked GSM version of the Palm Pre 2 for $449.99 without any carrier contracts. The Palm Pre 2 offers a 3.1-inch glass touchscreen display with a 480 x 320 pixel resolution, the new webOS 2.0 operating system, and a 1GHz processor. We had a chance to check out the device first-hand not too long ago, and we were impressed with what we saw. HP and Palm plan to launch a CDMA version of the phone on Verizon Wireless in the coming months, although it's not clear when. The Palm Pre 2 also launched on SFR in France during October. | Novatel Wireless intros North America's first dual-cell HSPA+ USB modem Posted: 18 Nov 2010 10:38 AM PST Today Novatell Wireless announced the Ovation MC547, a USB modem that will launch on Bell Mobility in Canada. The Ovation MC547 is reportedly the first dual-cell HSPA+ capable USB modem, and it will run on Bell Mobility's HSPA+ network. The device supports theoretical peak downlink rates of up to 11Mbps and uplink up to 11Mbps. Pricing and a specific launch date were not announced. Read the full story here. |
| BlackBerry Traffic out of beta today Posted: 18 Nov 2010 10:38 AM PST RIM released the full version of BlackBerry Traffic today. BlackBerry Traffic is an application that estimates your time of arrival, lets you know if a road is closed, and provides alternate driving routes. You simply need to enter in the address you're heading to and then the app provides an ETA and emails or texts a message to any recipients waiting for you on the other end. If you're late, they'll be notified. BlackBerry Traffic requires BlackBerry Maps, a GPS-equipped BlackBerry, and a data connection. BlackBerry Traffic is available for free in BlackBerry App World. | Qualcomm discussing FLO TV spectrum sale with AT&T Posted: 18 Nov 2010 10:37 AM PST Qualcomm has talked to AT&T about possibly selling the 700MHz spectrum it used for its FLO TV service, Bloomberg is reporting. Qualcomm recently decided to stop offering the service, which provides near broadcast quality television on mobile devices used on AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Qualcomm reportedly spent $683 million to use the spectrum between 2003 and 2008. Read the full story here. |

To take advantage of the Smartphone Talk Free plan, you'll first need a Nationwide Family SharePlan, which starts at $69.99 per month, and a $29.99 data plan. | Verizon Wireless revives KIN ONEm and KIN TWOm phones Posted: 18 Nov 2010 05:36 AM PST Verizon Wireless is again selling the KIN ONE and the KIN TWO phones, but this time the devices are called the KIN ONEm and the KIN TWOm. While it appears the phones still support data connectivity, there's no mention of the original cloud-storage "Loop" feature. It appears the Zune pass is still available over Wi-Fi. The KIN ONEm is available for $19.99 with a contract or $119.99 without one. The KIN TWOm is available for $49.99 with a 2-year contract and $219.99 without one. | Qualcomm outs next-gen dual-core Snapdragon chipset with LTE support Posted: 18 Nov 2010 05:30 AM PST During its annual Analyst Day meeting in New York, Qualcomm announced the latest member of its Snapdragon family of processors, the MSM8960. The MSM8960 is a dual-core chip that should deliver five times the performance of the original Snapdragon chip while consuming 75 percent less power. That means better performance for a longer amount of time. The MSM8960 is equipped with a multi-mode modem that supports 3G and long-term evolution (LTE) 4G networks. Built in WLAN, GPS, Bluetooth, FM Radio, and upgraded graphics capabilities are also included. Read the full story here. |
