Apple sued for iPhone "iBrick" iOS 4.0 update

A California woman has decided to sue Apple after the iOS 4.0 update earlier this year made her iPhone an 'iBrick.' The plaintiff believes that Apple may have purposely issued a faulty update in order to convince her to upgrade to an iPhone 4.

MetroPCS launches 4G LTE in LA and Philadelphia

Today MetroPCS announced that it is enabling its 4G LTE network in both Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Those markets join Las Vegas, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Detroit, the first MetroPCS 4G LTE markets. The Samsung Craft is MetroPCS' only 4G LTE phone. Priced at $299, the Craft offers a 3.3 inch AMOLED display, a 2GB microSD card, a 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, and more. MetroPCS says it plans to expand its 4G LTE network to Atlanta, Boston, Jacksonville, Miami, New York, Orlando, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Tampa between now and early 2011.

ABI: Sprint expected to ship 3 million 4G smartphones in 2010

According to ABI Research, Sprint is expected to ship as many as 3 million 4G capable smartphones for the year. "Sprint's 4G smartphone sales have been partially responsible for its recent subscriber growth. ABI Research forecasts that the carrier will ship almost three million 4G handsets for its WiMAX network by the end of 2010. That number is greater than many observers expected," ABI Research director Philip Solis said. Sprint's 4G WiMAX network is now available in 62 U.S. cities. Its New York network was activated on November 1. Sprint's 4G smartphones include the HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G.

AT&T responds to T-Mobile's 4G claims, says its network is bigger

Today AT&T responded to T-Mobile's new marketing of its HSPA+ network. T-Mobile, today, began calling its network "4G." "T-Mobile's claims about 4G are based on the same HSPA+ technology we have deployed to 180 million people today, more than T-Mobile's reported 140 million, and we'll have it rolled out to 250 million people by the end of this month, substantially more than the 200 million T-Mobile says it will have by year-end," an AT&T spokesperson told Phone Scoop. AT&T has a laptop USB modem that can access its HSPA+ network, but it has yet to release a phone capable of running on the network. New Facebook for Android now live, Places and Groups added

The latest version of Facebook for Android is now live in the Android Market. Available for free, Facebook for Android now provides Places, a feature that allows users to check-in to local places with their friends, and Groups. Facebook Groups allows users to share data with a specific set of people. The app should also offer improved notifications, although I haven't noticed that change yet. I have noticed that Events weren't being pushed recently, so here's to hoping that's fixed.

T-Mobile UK launching Samsung Galaxy Tab November 10

Today T-Mobile UK announced that it will launch the Android powered Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet on November 10. The device will retail for £529 ($851). The Samsung Galaxy Tab is powered by Android 2.2 and sports 7-inch touchscreen display. T-Mobile G2 update rolling out, includes Wi-Fi calling support

Today T-Mobile announced that it is rolling out a software update for the G2, one of its latest Android smartphones. The update, version 1.22.531.8, will automatically install on the G2 as an over-the-air download. It adds Wi-Fi calling support, resolves device freeze and unexpected power-off issues, improves data connection reliability, and optimizes radio recovery. Verizon Wireless adds Skype support to more feature phones

Today Verizon Wireless announced that more of its feature phones support its Skype application. Skype for Verizon Wireless phones allows users to place Skype calls over its circuit-switched network. Skyfire app with Flash support available now for $2.99

Today the Skyfire for iOS application was approved, and it's now available in the iTunes App Store. That's a day earlier than was originally expected. Skyfire for iOS allows Android users to watch Flash videos by converting the content to HTML5. Unfortunately, Flash games won't work at this time. The app is available for $2.99.

Facebook announces mobile development tools for smartphones

Today Facebook made a number of announcements about the mobile space, including a mobile development platform for multiple types of smartphones, including Android and iOS. The platform provides a single sign-on feature, Location APIs, and Deals. Single sign-on will allow users to sign into mobile apps using their Facebook login information. Facebook is also providing a Locations API for integration with its Places feature. Facebook Deals allows merchants to create and target deals to Facebook users based on their location. One Facebook Deals partner is Gap, which will give away 10,000 pairs of free blue jeans shortly. Other partners include The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, The North Face, The Palms in Las Vegas, and The Golden State Warriors.

Farmville creator launching Android poker game

During the Facebook mobile event today, Zynga, a mobile game developer, took the stage. The firm said that it is going to launch its first Android game dubbed "Zynga Poker." Zynga Poker is home to 6 million daily players, 375,000 concurrent daily users at any time, and at any minute, 90,000 players are going "all-in." If you haven't heard of Zynga before, you may know one of its more famous titles: Farmville. Farmville launched on Facebook first, and slowly made its way to iOS earlier this year. Zynga will use Facebook's new "single sign-on" feature, which should allow you to use your Facebook login information.

Facebook updating Android and iPhone apps with new functionality

Today Facebook is holding a mobile event. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, announced that Facebook is now used by 200 million mobile users. Facebook will be updating its iOS application with a an improved Places feature that allows users to add photos, and tag their friends easier. It's also adding Groups functionality to Facebook. Zuckerberg noted that the Android application, which "is a little behind," iOS, will also be getting the Places and Groups functionality.

Mark Zuckerberg: No Facebook phone in the works

Speaking during a Facebook Mobile event today, during which Facebook announced that it is releasing Facebook Places and Facebook Groups for Android, Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg set some rumors straight. He confirmed that Facebook is not working on a Facebook phone. "There's been this rumor that Facebook is going to build a phone. What a novel idea, but no," Zuckerberg said. The company will instead focus on building out its mobile applications and services. One announcement on those lines is that Facebook is planning to open up its Location API for developers. Nokia did not infringe on Apple patents, says ITC staff

Microsoft claims WP7 is more efficient, for users, than rival operating systems

A Microsoft spokesperson has said that interacting with Windows Phone 7 requires "20 percent fewer steps to perform common tasks," according to Computerworld. The claim comes after Computerworld asked Microsoft how Windows Phone 7 phones are "designed to get you in and out and back to life." Microsoft makes the aforementioned statement in its TV commercials. The efficiency claims are attributed to Microsoft's live tile-based user interface, which makes it easy to quickly launch an app or see information, such as the weather, at a glance. It's also easy and quick to search using Bing. Playing devil's advocate, Android and iOS devices offer quick search, too, and Android's live widgets make it easy to view information at-a-glance.

Today T-Mobile officially launched the Motorola DEFY, an Android 2.1 smartphone that's "life resistant." The DEFY offers resistance to both water and dust. It also offers Motorola's MOTOBLUR custom user interface, which has a focus on social networking. Other features include a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, DLNA support for multimedia streaming, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The DEFY is available for $99.99 with a 2-year T-Mobile contract.

A new report from comScore, which shows a snapshot of the mobile phone industry in the United States, suggests that Samsung had the largest amount of growth, in terms of mobile phone market share, during the third quarter of 2010. Android also saw the greatest growth in the smartphone operating system market.

Today VEVO, the popular music video application available on iOS devices, announced that it will broadcast live concerts to iPhone and iPod touch users during November. The concerts will be broadcast through a partnership with CBS Interactive's "Live on Letterman" show. Concerts include Brad Paisley on Wednesday, November 3 at 8pm EST, Bon Jovi on Tuesday November 9 at 8pm EST, and Rascal Flatts on Monday, November 15 at 8pm EST. Apple bumping iTunes song preview to 90 seconds

Today Apple sent a note to music labels stating that it will soon allow users to listen to a 90 second song preview before deciding to make a purchase. That's a full minute longer than the current song preview length of 30 seconds."We are pleased to let you know that we are preparing to increase the length of music previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds on the iTunes Store in the United States. We believe that giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases," Apple told record labels. We assume this practice will carry over to the iPhone and iPod touch music stores as well.

Today Qik and T-Mobile announced T-Mobile Video Chat, a video chat application that is making its debut today on the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. The software is powered by Qik and integrates with the Android address book. The app lets you place video calls over both 4G and Wi-Fi networks. Users will be able to see if members of their address book are available for video chats. It's free and came preloaded on the myTouch 4G, and we have no doubt it will be included on future devices with forward-facing cameras.

LG Optimus Pad Android tablet could launch in Q1 2011

According to an anonymous senior official at LG, the company plans to release its first Android powered tablet during the first quarter of 2011. The device is supposedly dubbed the "LG Optimus Pad," and will offer an 8.9-inch display. It will also likely run Honeycomb, the version of Android that will cater more to the tablet formfactor. Angry Birds for iPhone downloaded 10 million times

Today Rovio announced that its Angry Birds game has sold over 10 million copies in the iTunes app store. The game originally launched in December 2009, and has since had subsequent launches on a number of platforms including Android and Symbian. Before Halloween, Rovio also launched a special edition Halloween version of Angry Birds.
