New AIM for BlackBerry client available October 28 Posted: 27 Oct 2011 04:52 AM PDT RIM has announced that its AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) for BlackBerry client is being ousted and replaced with AOL's own AIM for BlackBerry client starting this Friday, October 28. RIM built the original app for its BlackBerry users but has announced that the app will be discontinued and will no longer be supported. O2 UK now offering HTC Sensation XE smartphone with Beats Audio Posted: 27 Oct 2011 01:12 AM PDT O2 is offering its UK customers HTC's Sensation XE smartphone, which includes studio quality audio from Beats Audio by Dr. Dre in-ear headphones. The smartphone offers a speedy 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch qHD widescreen touchscreen display, and Google's Android OS. The device also sports an 8MP camera/camcorder and 16GB of memory. HTC Rhyme Android smartphone now available from O2 UK Posted: 27 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT The HTC Rhyme is now available in the UK with wireless carrier O2. The Rhyme, which is being offered in the same plum color as Verizon Wireless here in the States, offers users Google's Android 2.3 operating system as well as HTC's own Sense 3.5 user interface on top. The sleek smartphone offers a zippy 1GHz processor under its hood as well as a 5MP camera with HD video recording capabilities. HTC ThunderBolt (Verizon) Android 2.3 Gingerbread update now available Posted: 26 Oct 2011 11:36 AM PDT Today Verizon Wireless informed us that customers using its 4G LTE powered HTC ThunderBolt Android smartphone can now update their devices to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The update can be initiated by going to the device's Settings app, and then jumping into Software Update and Check New. The Android 2.3 update adds improved power management and battery monitoring, a new home screen, and a large number of general bug fixes and enhancements. Nokia N8 gets minor software update, but not Symbian Belle Posted: 26 Oct 2011 11:13 AM PDT Nokia is pushing out a software update to its N8 smartphone that addresses a number of bugs in the Symbian Anna platform that runs on the phone. Unfortunately, the update does not upgrade the N8 to Symbian Belle with its myriad of new features. Things that are improved with the update include quicker email and messaging, faster GPS locks, and fixes for minor bugs. Nokia to bring LTE, CDMA handsets to market in 2012 Posted: 26 Oct 2011 10:46 AM PDT During the main keynote speech at Nokia World today, Nokia president and CEO Stephen Elop revealed that the company intends to bring LTE and CDMA equipped Windows Phone handsets to "applicable markets" in 2012. Though he didn't specifically say the U.S. market was one of those to get the LTE and CDMA phones, it pairs nicely with the promise that Nokia will bring a suite of phones to the U.S. next year. The company did not reveal any of the products that will be headed to our shores at Nokia World, but we have heard that announcements for U.S. devices will happen very soon. It is a lower-cost model, which can be witnessed by its cheap feel when compared to the fancier Lumia 800 model. The Lumia 710 has a 3.7-inch ClearBlack TFT LCD display and is powered by the same 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as the 800. LG DoublePlay dual-screened smartphone now available from T-Mobile Posted: 26 Oct 2011 08:14 AM PDT LG's funky DoublePlay smartphone, the one with two touchscreens and a split-QWERTY keyboard, is now available for purchase from T-Mobile. The DoublePlay runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and its two screens measure 3.5 and 2.0 inches across the diagonal. It also has a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video capture. Google Nexus S to get Android 4 ICS update "within weeks"; Nexus One, not so much Posted: 26 Oct 2011 07:54 AM PDT According to the Telegraph, Google Hugo Barra has said that Google's Nexus S Android 2.3 gingerbread smartphone will receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update "within weeks." Barra also noted that the Nexus One, Google's first Android "hero" device, will not get an official ICS update because the hardware is simply too old. That's not a real surprise to us, but is sure to be a disappointment to those Nexus One users out there. Read the full story here. |
MeeGo-powered Nokia N9 coming in white this year Posted: 26 Oct 2011 07:36 AM PDT Today at its Nokia World conference in London, Nokia announced that its ~MeeGo powered N9 smartphone is to be available in a new white polyurethane body later this year. Nokia explained that the N9 was not available in white from the start because of some manufacturing hurdles that had to be overcome first. It has many similarities to the MeeGo-powered N9, including its single-piece polycarbonate construction. The 800 is powered by a single-core, 1.4GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and sports a 3.7-inch, WVGA resolution ClearBlack AMOLED display. It will be available in select markets next month. Reminder: Motorola DROID RAZR available for pre-order with Verizon tomorrow Posted: 26 Oct 2011 06:56 AM PDT Just a quick reminder that Motorola's hot new DROID RAZR for Verizon Wireless is set to be available for pre-order starting tomorrow, October 27. The device will be available for a pretty steep $299.99, but that's on par with most of the other 4G LTE-equipped devices from Verizon that have been put out so far. Unlike those others, though, this one has a steel frame and a massive battery that is mated up with a dual-core processor and a nice qHD resolution AMOLED display. Sprint pushes out security fix for Android-powered HTC smartphones Posted: 26 Oct 2011 05:00 AM PDT Sprint has released an over-the-air security update for users of its Android-powered HTC smartphones, including the HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Shift 4G, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC EVO View 4G, and the HTC Wildfire S. The problem that the update addresses is one that could allow malicious third-party apps to compromise personal data on HTC Android devices. Update notices will be sent out in waves to users, though Sprint customers can also download the update manually by going to Settings, System updates, HTC software update, Check now.
