Apple patent victory keeps Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 off Australian shelves

Bad news for Samsung, as Apple has been awarded a victory in its efforts to block the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet from being sold in Australia. A judge has ruled that Samsung cannot sell its tablet in the country as long as it violates Apple's patents, such as those related to touchscreen technology.

Amazon puts all non-Apple Verizon phones on sale for a penny

Amazon is running a pretty good deal if you are in the market for a smartphone from Verizon Wireless and are not a fan of Apple's offerings. The e-tailer is listing all of Verizon's phones other than the iPhone for a penny with new two-year contracts. The offer even extends to the Motorola DROID BIONIC, Verizon's current flagship 4G LTE smartphone. The deal is good for new lines of service only - no upgrades here - and is on through October 17.

Kik for BlackBerry available once again despite RIM's efforts

The popular cross-messaging app Kik was kicked off of the BlackBerry platform last year because apparently RIM felt it was too similar to its own BlackBerry Messenger service. Along with being banned from the BlackBerry App World, the developers of Kik were also blocked from using RIM's BlackBerry developer tools. That wasn't enough to stop the feisty bunch, however, as Kik has relaunched its BlackBerry app, this time rebuilt from the ground up with Java-based tools.

Samsung offers updated Galaxy smartphone in Europe to evade sales ban

Samsung has revealed that it will launch updated versions of three of its Galaxy smartphones in Europe in order to avoid a sales ban imposed by a Dutch court. The court ruled that three of Samsung's smartphones violated Apple's patents, and banned them from sale with a grace period ending on October 14 to give Samsung some time to address the issue.

Samsung Galaxy S II now available in T-Mobile USA stores

The T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone can now be had in the carrier's stores across the country. Early buyers have been able to order the phone online since Monday, but now anyone can walk into a T-Mobile store and purchase it. The T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S II is the third edition to be released by American carriers. It features a 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor that is different from other Galaxy S II phones. It also has support for T-Mobile's 42Mbps HSPA+ network. Buyers will have to part with $229.99 and sign up for a new two-year contract should they decide the Galaxy S II is the right phone for them.

Find My Friends lets users share they location with others, without having to check-in at places. Users have control over how long their location is shared and with whom it is shared. Apple has made active its iCloud service, with anticipation mounting for the expected release of iOS 5 later today. iCloud lets users access their email, calendar, and contacts from their iPhone or iPad via the iCloud.com website. The service also has a Find my Phone feature that can locate a lost or stolen iPhone or iPad. Users can go to iCloud.com and sign in with their Apple ID now to start testing it if they are using a pre-release version of iOS 5 already. The rest of us will have to wait until later today for when Apple officially releases iOS 5.

HTC Amaze 4G now available from T-Mobile

HTC's latest Android powerhouse, the Amaze 4G, is now available for purchase from T-Mobile USA. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone features a 4.3-inch, qHD (540 x 960 pixel) display and a dual-core, 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor. It has HTC's Sense 3.0 interface and supports T-Mobiles 42Mpbs HSPA+ network. Its real claim to fame, though, is its camera, as it features an 8 megapixel unit with a 28mm, f/2.2 lens and backside illuminated sensor. It can also record 1080p HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) video. Sprint, Verizon to offer unlocked micro-SIM options on Apple iPhone 4S

The Apple iPhone 4S is the first Apple smartphone to feature both GSM and CDMA support within one model, allowing users of Verizon Wireless, and now Sprint, to take their phones overseas and use them on GSM networks. Traditionally, this requires the users to pay high roaming fees, as they are usually forced to use their home carrier's roaming partner for service when traveling. However, Macworld is reporting that Sprint will offer the iPhone 4S with an unlocked SIM slot, letting users purchase a local microSIM card when they travel. Verizon Wireless has confirmed that it will offer a similar option for customers in good standing.
