RIM offers free apps as an apology for service outages

Many have been wondering how RIM was planning to compensate the millions of users who were affected by the prolonged service outages last week. Apparently, RIM equates nearly four days of no service to the value of a poker app, as its compensation for users is to offer them a set of premium apps to download for free. RIM says the total value of all of the apps offered is over $100.

Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Player 4, 5 now available in the U.S.

Samsung's personal media tablets have finally hit U.S. store shelves. The Galaxy Player 4 and 5 run the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and offer users full access to Google's Android Market for apps as well as offering Samsung's TouchWiz UI, 1GHz Samsung processors, 512MB of RAM, microSD card slots with support for up to 32GB microSD cards, and dual cameras. The difference between the two devices is the touchscreens. The 4 sports a 4-inch WVGA Super Clear LCD display and the 5 features a larger 5-inch WVGA TFT LCD display screen. The Samsung Galaxy Player 4 and 5 are available now in the U.S for $229 and $269, respectively.

Nokia Suite Beta 3.2 released, Ovi Suite name dropped

A beta version of Nokia Suite 3.2, previously called Nokia Ovi Suite, is now available to the masses. The new desktop application provides a new and improved user interface look and feel, an improved firmware update system, better sync logs, and many random bug fixes that help things run more smoothly. The new free Nokia Suite 3.2.64 Beta is available now for download.

Aw crap. 1 in 6 UK phones contaminated with feces

According to a UK based study run by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Queen Mary University of London, 1 in 6 cellphones in the UK could be contaminated with traces of feces. The study was released this past Saturday to mark "Global Handwashing Day."

Motorola ATRIX 2 now available from AT&T for $100

The Android powered Motorola ATRIX 2 is now available for purchase by AT&T customers. The ATRIX 2 is the follow-up to the ATRIX 4G that launched earlier this year. The device features a larger and sharper 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen display and offers an 8MP camera with autofocus and flash on board as well as a user facing camera for video chatting. The smartphone also boasts Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage built-in, and compatibility with the Lapdock laptop dock to convert the ATRIX 2 into a netbook computer. The Motorola ATRIX 2 is available now from the AT&T for $99.99 with a new qualifying two-year contract.

Samsung launches ChatON messaging app for Android

This week, Samsung released ChatON, its cross-platform messaging app, for the Android platform. Similar to BlackBerry Messenger or the new iMessage feature of iOS 5, ChatON lets users send text and multimedia messages to one another without having to pay for SMS services. It supports both individual and group conversations. ChatON is available for Android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread phones, as well as Samsung bada smartphones and feature phones. Samsung says that ChatON will be available for the iOS and BlackBerry platforms in the future. ChatON is free and available in the Android Market now.

Samsung denied request to ban Apple iPhone sales by Dutch court

In another setback in its ongoing patent slugfest with Apple, a Dutch court on Friday denied Samsung's request for an injunction against Apple's 3G-capable iPhone and iPad products, which Samsung claims make unlicensed use of its own 3G patents.

White iPhone 4S selling out faster than Black in the UK

According to UK wireless carrier O2, the company stated that the white iPhone 4S was outselling the black version of the smartphone in its first few hours of availability. The carrier also stated that it sold more iPhone 4S smartphones in the first hour of availability than it sold of the iPhone 4 during the older device's initial hour of being on sale last year.

Google said to be working on music store of its own

According to a report from the New York Times this week, Google is in the process of deploying a music store of its own to compete with the likes of Apple's iTunes Music store and AmazonMP3. Google's current music offering that was released earlier this year does not actually sell music, it just lets users store their tunes in the cloud so they can be accessed anywhere the user has an internet connection.

Google Voice app for iPhone pulled due to iOS 5 issues

Google has pulled its popular Google Voice app for the iPhone from the iTunes App Store, but its not because of any nefarious actions on the part of Apple. Apparently, the Google Voice app does not play very well with iOS 5, and some users (including us) have found the app to just crash after opening it. Google promises that it has a fix coming, and it will release that as soon as it is ready. Until then, users will still be able to receive forwarded calls and messages, and calls can be made from Google's phone interface. There are third-party alternatives in the App Store that are working, if you really need to get your Google Voice fix before Google fixes the situation.

Motorola is now offering customers its XOOM tablet in a new flavor, the Family Edition. Similar to the original XOOM, the device sports Wi-Fi, a colorful and bright 10.1-inch touchscreen display screen, a dual-core 1GHz processor, and a 5MP camera that is capable of recording HD video. The Family Edition will offer users only 16GB of internal data storage compared to the original's 32GB. The new Android tablet is on sale today at Best Buy's nationwide for $379.
