Nuance buys Swype for $102.5 million cash

Nuance Communications, maker of voice recognition software and the backbone of Apple's new Siri system for the iPhone 4S, has announced the purchase of Swype, a popular on-screen keyboard for Android, Symbian, and other smartphone platforms. In addition to producing voice recognition software, Nuance also makes the T9 predictive text software, a rival of Swype.

Unlocked Apple iPhone 4S to be available in November

If you woke up early this morning in hope of purchasing an Apple iPhone 4S and wanted to get an unlocked version, you were out of luck, as Apple is only offering locked versions for AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint at the current time. However, if you have some patience, Apple has revealed that unlocked versions of the iPhone 4S will begin shipping in November. The unlocked model will only work with AT&T in the U.S., but it can be used with overseas carriers that support GSM/UMTS networks. Cost for the unlocked version is the same as full retail pricing, with the 16GB model costing $649, and the 32GB and 64GB versions totaling $749 and $849, respectively.

Apple iPhone 4S now available for pre-order from Apple, carriers

Here's a reminder in case you weren't aware, the Apple iPhone 4S is now available for pre-order from Apple, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless. The pre-orders went live at 3:01 a.m. ET/12:01 a.m. PT here in the U.S., and while a number of users complained about issues with placing their orders at that time, it seems that Apple has sorted things out and orders can be placed with relative ease at this point. The 16GB version will cost $199 with a new two-year contract, while the 32GB and 64GB models cost $299 and $399 respectively. Full retail prices are $649, $749, and $849 for each respective model.

Samsung, Google postpone next week's product launch
