Nokia moves 16.8 million smartphones in Q3 2011, beats projections

Nokia has released its Q3 2011 financial results, and while the company is unsurprisingly down from where it was last year, it managed to lose less ground than analysts had predicted. Nokia sold more smartphones that it was predicted to, and it moved more feature phones than the same quarter last year, thanks to strong interest in dual-SIM phones in emerging markets.

Microsoft opens Windows Phone 7.5 upgrade to all phones ahead of schedule

Microsoft has determined that the worldwide roll-out of the Windows Phone 7.5, nee Mango, upgrade has gone so well, that it has decided to open it up to the remainder of users who have yet to receive it, ahead of schedule. At this point, all users should have either received a notice or will receive one very shortly noting that the upgrade is ready for them to download, at which point they will need to connect their phones to a computer and use the Zune software to upgrade the device. Windows Phone 7.5 offers a number of enhancements to the platform, including multitasking, live tile support for third-party apps, and Internet Explorer 9 Mobile.

Verizon teams with VMware to offer Android phones for work and play

This "sandboxing" of business data is attractive to companies that let their employees use their own phones for work purposes.

Facebook Messenger update hits Android, BlackBerry smartphones

The updated Facebook Messenger app that hit the iPhone earlier today is now available for Android, and, for the first time, BlackBerry smartphones. The new Facebook Messenger offers the ability to see when the other person is typing a message and whether they are on a computer or mobile device. It also packs support for 12 additional languages. Facebook Messenger 1.5 is free and available in the Android Market and BlackBerry App World now.

Netflix launches Android 3.x Honeycomb app

Netflix has expanded support for Android tablets with the release of a new app update that is compatible with the Android 3.x Honeycomb tablet operating system. Like the smartphone versions of the app, the tablet version of Netflix lets users manage their instant queues and watch streaming movies and TV shows. Netflix for Android tablets is free and available in the Android Market now.

Google offers Wallet payments in NJ Transit terminals, buses

Google has announced a new partnership with NJ Transit that allows users to pay for their fare with the Google Wallet app on the Google Nexus S 4G smartphone. This is the first time that Google's new Wallet payment option is accepted at a public transit system. The service is available at New York Penn Station, Newark Airport Station, and select bus terminals. Google says that it will bring Wallet tap-to-pay service to other transit systems in the near future.

Kobo Vox tablet beats Amazon Kindle Fire to the punch

Kobo has released its new Vox tablet, a 7-inch, Android 2.3 Gingerbread tablet that looks very similar in appearance to the Amazon Kindle Fire or BlackBerry PlayBook. The Vox doesn't quite have the high-end internals that those two tablets feature, but it does come in at a fairly attractive price point.

U.S. Cellular has announced that it will offer the HTC Wildfire S smartphone starting this Friday, October 21. The Wildfire S will be free after rebate with a new two-year contract. It features a 3.2-inch HVGA (320 x 480 pixel) resolution display and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Customers will be able to purchase phone online or in U.S. Cellular stores.

RIM offers DriveSafe.ly Pro as first free app for outage compensation

RIM has announced that DriveSafe.ly Pro is the first premium app to be available to BlackBerry users for free as part of the compensation for the extensive service outages from last week. DriveSafe.ly Pro can read a users' text messages and emails out loud while users are driving so that they can focus on the road and not their smartphones. It can also be used to send responses with voice dictation. DriveSafe.ly Pro normally retails for $19.99, but it will be available for free in the BlackBerry App World for the coming weeks. RIM says the other apps that were announced as being free to users earlier this week will be made available over the next four weeks.

Facebook has updated its stand-alone Messenger app for the iPhone to version 1.5 and has added a number of new features while offering performance enhancements. The new version has better support for iOS 5; shows users who is online at their computer or who is on a mobile device; lets users see when the other person is typing; offers a faster way to compose messages to those that you communicate with the most; performance enhancements; and has support for 12 new languages. Motorola DROID RAZR Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade to come in early 2012

Motorola has revealed that its new DROID RAZR smartphone (known simply as the RAZR in Europe) will be upgraded from its Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS to the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS in early 2012. The company says that while the DROID RAZR was designed for and launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it has already worked out a plan to bring the new OS to the phone next year.

O2, Three UK, and Vodafone UK have all announced that they will be stocking the new Google Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone when it is launched next month. The Galaxy Nexus features a 4.65-inch, Super AMOLED HD (1280 x 720 pixel) display, and a 1.2GHz, dual-core processor. It is the first device to hit the market with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Google's mobile OS. Pricing and exact release dates have yet to be announced.

Apple iPhone 4S to be offered by regional carrier C Spire Wireless

C Spire Wireless, a regional CDMA carrier formerly known as Cellular South, has announced that it will offer the Apple iPhone 4S smartphone in the coming weeks. This marks the first time that a regional U.S. carrier has been able to offer Apple's darling smartphone. C Spire did not reveal how much the iPhone 4S will sell for, or what plans will be available to customers, but the device itself will likely end up being the usual $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for the 32GB model, and $399 for the 64GB edition. This is a pretty big milestone for regional carriers in the U.S., but boy does this have to sting for T-Mobile, which is the only national carrier that doesn't offer the iPhone.

Samsung was given the honor of being the first manufacturer with an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device to hit the market, but that doesn't mean it will be the only player in the game. HTC is a prolific Android manufacturer, though its custom of modifying the underlying Android platform with its own Sense user interface may slow it down when it comes time to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google claims 6 million Android tablets in use

During the AsiaD conference held by All Things D, Google vice president of mobile Andy Rubin claimed that there were currently 6 million Android tablets in use across the world. It is interesting to note that he just said "Android" and not Honeycomb tablets specifically, as there are likely many Android tablets in use that do not have the tablet-optimized version of the Android operating system. Six million sounds like a lot, but it pales in comparison to the number of iPads out there (40 million according to Apple) and is a small fraction of the 190 million Android devices that are active across the globe.
