Google Books for Android updated with better 7-inch tablet support, +1 feature

Google updated its Books app for Android smartphones recently with better support for more devices and a few new features. Most notably, the updated version works better on 7-inch Android tablets. There is also the ability to search through a book and add a +1 to a selection that the reader likes. The updated Google Books for Android is free and available in the Android Market now.

Samsung looking to ban sales of Apple iPhone 4S in Italy, France

Not a day after the new Apple iPhone 4S was announced, Samsung filed patent infringement lawsuits against Apple in Italy and France with an intent to block the sale of the new smartphone. The company also plans to file suits in other countries attempting to block sale of the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 4S headed to Three UK

Three UK has announced that it will offer Apple's latest smartphone, the iPhone 4S. Three has not announced the date that it will be offered on yet, but we suspect it will be October 14, along with the rest of the providers. The iPhone 4S is Apple's newest flagship device and will offer users a zippy A5 dual-core processor, dual antennas, an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording as well as a backside illuminated CMOS for better low light snaps. The phone's battery is expected to provide up to 8 hours of talk time or 6 hours of internet browsing.

Apple refreshes iPod touch line with white color option, new price

In addition to revealing the new iPhone 4S smartphone today, Apple announced a mild refresh to its popular iPod touch line. The basic hardware in the iPod touch remains the same, but customers can now opt for a white color option in addition to the black model. Apple has lowered the price of the personal media player as well, with the 8GB model costing only $199. The 32GB and 64GB versions cost $299 and $399, respectively. The new iPod touch models will be available for purchase starting on October 12.

Apple iPhone 4S headed to international waters October 14

During today's iPhone press event, Apple announced it will offer its latest uberphone, the iPhone 4S, on October 14 in the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia in addition to the U.S. The new iPhone 4S features a speedy dual-core A5 processor, an 8MP camera/camcorder with video image stabilization and noise reduction as well as offering a new voice control system named Siri.

iPhone 4, 3GS hit the bargain bin to make room for the iPhone 4S

Apple has announced that it will continue to sell the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS alongside the iPhone 4S when it is released later this month. The iPhone 4 will be available in an 8GB configuration and will cost $99 on-contract, while the 3GS will also feature 8GB of storage and be free on-contract. The 3GS was released over two years ago, so it says something about its staying power that Apple is opting to keep it in its smartphone line-up. Or, that Apple is still sitting on a ton of them and is looking for an easy way to move them. Either way, its a good option for bargain hunters.

Apple's iPhone finally makes its way to Sprint

It has been a long wait for Sprint customers, but the time has finally come when they can now select the iPhone as their phone of choice on the nations' third-place carrier. With today's announcement of the new iPhone 4S, Apple revealed that the phone will be available for AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and now Sprint in the U.S. Sprint has said in the past that the number one reason that customers leave for other carriers is the iPhone, so it hopes that stocking Apple's wunderphone will stem the tide of fleeing subscribers. The iPhone 4S will be available in black or white in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions for $199, $299, and $399 respectively. It goes on sale on October 14 with pre-orders starting on October 7.

Apple intros Find My Friends location sharing app

Today Apple unveiled a new app for its iOS users: Find My Friends. The app will be a part of Apple's iCloud service and lets users share their locations with each other, similar to competitors Foursquare and Google Latitude. Apple has added features that allows users to make location sharing temporary, so that it is automatically disabled at the end of your family outing to a theme park, for example. Apple has also included parental restrictions and other privacy controls. We assume that Find My Friends will roll out in conjunction with iOS 5 and the new iCloud service, which are set to launch October 12.

Apple claims over 250 million iOS devices sold to date

Apple has announced that it has sold over 250 million iOS devices worldwide so far. That figure includes all of the company's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models. Last year the company reported that there were 120 million such iOS devices being used, which means that the total number of iOS devices has more than doubled since that time.

Apple iCloud available October 12

Today during a press conference today at its Cupertino campus, Apple finally revealed when it will take the wraps of its highly anticipated iCloud service. The company announced that iCloud will go live starting on October 12. Apple iCloud is a service platform that will keep a user's content in sync, wirelessly, without any intervention form the user. The iCloud service will keep contacts, calendars, mail, photos, and music all in sync across multiple devices. Wireless backup is also integrated.

Apple introduces Cards app for printing, mailing cards from iPhone, iPad

Today during its press conference, Apple announced a new application for its iPhone and iPad devices: Cards. The Cards app will give users the ability to create greeting cards directly from their mobile iOS devices. The app will take photos from the device, and then print them and mail them directly to recipients via the U.S. Postal Service. Users will then receive a push notification confirming when the card is received. The new Card app will be available October 12 from the App Store for free, but each card will cost $2.99 for those mailed in the U.S. and $4.99 each for those sent to recipients outside of the U.S.

Apple has just announced that the new iOS 5 update will be available as a free download on October 12. iOS 5 brings a number of new features to Apple's mobile operating system, including the new Notification Center, iMessage, improved camera, and much, much more - over 200 new features in total. It will be available for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, and third and fourth generation iPod touch media players. Apple iPad in 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies

It appears that Apple's iPad tablet can be found everywhere; in schools, at work, and at home. Today during its press event, Apple stated that three out of four tablets sold in the U.S. today are iPads. Tim Cook, Apple's new CEO, went further with stats and reported that 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies are either testing or currently using iPads in the workplace. The Cupertino giant also indicated that every state in the U.S. has an iPad deployment program either in place or in pilot for education programs.

Apple's App Store home to 500,000 apps - 140,000 for iPad

Apple's Scott Forstall just announced at the company's event for the new iPhone that the iTunes App Store is now home to over 500,000 apps, with 140,000 having been specifically built for the iPad. For comparison, the last known numbers of Google's Android Market showed there to be 250,000 apps available. Eighteen billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store since its launch, and more than 1 billion are downloaded each month. Apple claims to have paid $3 billion to developers who sell apps in the App Store. Additionally, iOS makes up 61 percent of mobile browsing in the world, compared to Android's 31 percent.

Ahead of Apple's big announcement, an image of the iPhone 4S has appeared on Apple's Japanese website. The iPhone 4S appears to look exactly like the iPhone 4, but no specifications were noted to confirm any possible differences. A release date of October 14 was mentioned. Evernote for iOS updated with checkboxes, improved formatting

Evernote has released an update for its iOS app that brings it to parity with the options available to Android users. The new update offers a number of improvements with formatting text and includes support for checkboxes in lists. Constellation T is Vertu's first touchscreen smartphone for people with more money than brains

Nokia's luxury brand Vertu has been cranking out absurdly expensive phones for nearly 15 years, but it has yet to release anything that tugs at the heartstrings of a smartphone lover. That is is to change, apparently, as the Bluetooth SIG has revealed what looks to be Vertu's first smartphone device with a touchscreen, the Constellation T.

Apple has rejected Samsung's offer to make feature concessions on its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in order to allow it to be released in Australia. Apple claims that Samsung's offer gave no basis for a settlement and that the court should rule if the Galaxy Tab 10.1 infringes upon Apple's touchscreen patents or not.

LG's Optimus LTE pairs 4G LTE speed with HD IPS display

Microsoft releases Hotmail app for Android smartphones

Amidst a slew of changes announced for its Hotmail service, Microsoft also released the long-awaited Hotmail app for the Android platform. The Hotmail app for Android offers support for push email, contact and calendar sync, folder support, and the ability to access multiple Hotmail accounts. It is compatible with Android 2.1 Eclair through 2.3 Gingerbread, but it is not yet available for Android 3.0 Honeycomb-based tablets. You can download the Hotmail for Android app for free from the Android Market now.
