Nokia launches Lumia 800, its first Windows Phone smartphone

During the Nokia World conference this morning, Nokia unveiled the Lumia 800, its long-awaited Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone. The Lumia 800 features very similar hardware to the MeeGo-powered N9, but there are some different internal components and, of course, that Microsoft operating system.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Ice Cream Sandwich lands in the UK November 16

Google's latest flagship smartphone that sports its new Ice Cream Sandwich Android operating system, the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung, is set to hit UK store shelves starting November 16. According to online phone retailer Phones4U, the Galaxy Nexus will be available to Orange customers starting November 16. The Galaxy Nexus features a massive 4.65-inch, Super AMOLED HD (1280 x 720 pixel) touchscreen display, and a speedy 1.2GHz dual-core processor. It is the first device to hit the market with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Google's mobile OS.

Samung Exhibit II 4G smartphone announced for T-Mobile

Though the Samsung Exhibit 4G was announced by T-Mobile less than 5 months ago, the carrier has gone ahead and released its successor, the aptly-named Exhibit II 4G. The Exhibit II 4G offers a slightly larger display than the original and will be available in both contract and no-contract versions.

It seems that few devices launched today are truly surprises. Nokia's first two Windows Phone smartphones, which are due to be officially unveiled tomorrow at Nokia World, are no exceptions. Some photos of the Windows Phone-powered Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 have surfaced on the web.

Opera Mini 4.4 for Java J2ME feature phones now available

Opera Software has announced that version 4.4 of its Opera Mini web browser for Java J2ME based devices, including many feature phones, is now available. This update adds some of the improved networking features found in the smartphone version of Opera Mini 6.5, and also includes bug fixes pertaining to logging into Opera Link and some user interface issues. The application can be downloaded from m.opera.com.

RIM acquires online services company NewBay

Research In Motion has announced that it has acquired NewBay, a company that provides messaging, social networking, and cloud storage products to handset manufacturers and carriers. RIM's Inside BlackBerry blog says "NewBay's LifeCache platform helps enable operators and device makers to deliver content across multiple, connected devices such as mobile phones, PCs and tablets." The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Vonage makes international calling easy with the Extensions app for iPhone

Vonage has released its Extensions app for the iPhone that allows users to make cheap international calls from their mobile handset with their Vonage account. Previously released for Android smartphones, the Extensions app ties into the iPhone's contact list, so users can directly dial the person they want to call. Without the app, users have to dial an access number, enter a pin code, and then dial the number they want to reach. Vonage Extensions is free and available in the iTunes App Store now, requires a Vonage account.

Motorola promises Android 4.0 ICS devices 6 weeks after Google releases it

In a post on its official Twitter account, Motorola has revealed that it plans to release devices with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich six weeks after Google makes the final version available to manufacturers. Motorola did not say when it plans to upgrade existing devices to the new software, but it has hinted in the past that the just-announced DROID RAZR would be getting the upgrade. Google is expected to release the Google Galaxy Nexus next month, which will be the first smartphone on the market with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
