RIM comments on recent BlackBerry outages in Europe, Africa, Middle East

Millions of BlackBerry users across the globe have seen their beloved smartphones turn into little more than feature phones over the past couple of days, thanks to the repeated BlackBerry service outages in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and other parts of the world. The outage has prevented users from sending or receiving email, browsing the web, or using RIM's BlackBerry Messenger service. RIM has released a statement on the outage, and points the blame on a hardware failure within its own infrastructure.

New X1 app lets iPhone and iPad users search desktop documents

A new app is available for the iPhone and iPad that lets users search documents stored on their Mac or PC while they are away from their desks. The X1 Mobile Search app will search for file names and within documents, and provides detailed viewing of documents that are stored on the desktop computer.

Twitter app for iOS updated with image sharing, iOS 5 support

Twitter is prepping for the big release of iOS 5 tomorrow, and it has updated its official app for the iPhone and iPad with better support for iOS 5. Additionally, the app now supports uploading images to Twitter's own image hosting service, an improved view of Direct Messages for the iPad, and the ability to view nearby tweets. Version 3.5 of Twitter for iOS is free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

Amazon hit with lawsuit over Kindle Fire patent violation

Though the Kindle Fire tablet won't be available to consumers until November 15, Amazon has already been hit with a patent violation lawsuit for the device. Smartphone Technologies LLC, a known patent collector, claims that the Kindle Fire violates four of its smartphone-related patents.

U.S. now has more cellphones than people

The CTIA has released the latest statistics on cellphone users in the U.S., and it claims that there are 327.6 million cellphone subscriptions in America, a penetration rate of 103.9 percent compared to the U.S. population of 315.5 million. Of those 327.6 million subscriptions, 95.8 million are for smartphones.

RIM had just restored services only hours prior to the system going to down for a second time in two days.

Apple iPhone 4S processor estimated at 800MHz, lives up to Apple's claims

Apple doesn't like to talk about specifications too much when it comes to its iPhone and iPad devices, but that doesn't stop users from trying to decipher exactly how many megahertz and megabytes are found in Apple's devices. The latest iPhone 4S is equipped with an A5 processor pulled from the iPad 2, and tests from around the web show that it is likely clocked slightly slower than the iPad 2's unit, but that it still performs much better than the A4 chip found in the iPhone 4.

Apple iPad makes up 97.2 percent of tablet web browsing in the U.S.

Customers in the U.S. may be buying tablets other than the iPad (though, not very many), but it doesn't seem like they are using them to browse the web, at least not according to comScore's latest numbers. According to the research firm's latest report, iPads accounted for a whopping 97.2 percent of all tablet web browsing in the month of August.
