Apple iPhone 4S smartphone now available in stores Posted: 14 Oct 2011 05:00 AM PDT Today is the day that Apple's next-generation iPhone, the iPhone 4S, goes on sale in stores across the world. Many retail stores are opening their doors at 8 a.m. to satisfy the demand for the popular smartphone. For the first time, the iPhone will be available to Sprint customers in addition to AT&T and Verizon Wireless users. Though the iPhone 4S looks physically the same as last year's iPhone 4, it features a new dual-core A5 processor and an upgraded 8 megapixel camera. It also sports Siri, Apple's take on voice control. The iPhone 4S is available in either black or white, and comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities, which cost $199, $299, and $399, respectively, with a new two-year contract. Android devices now number 190 million worldwide Posted: 13 Oct 2011 02:00 PM PDT During Google's investor call for its Q3 2011 financial results, the company revealed that there are now 190 million activated Android devices across the globe. Google's mobile business has grown 2.5 times over the past twelve months, with mobile run revenue now totaling $2.5 billion. AT&T's 4G LTE phones to be lighter, thinner than competition Posted: 13 Oct 2011 07:45 AM PDT Speaking to CNET this week, AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega claimed that its upcoming 4G LTE smartphones will be thinner and more power efficient that those offered by competing carriers (read: Verizon Wireless). RIM says all BlackBerry services have been restored Posted: 13 Oct 2011 07:15 AM PDT During another press call this morning to address the worldwide BlackBerry service outage, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis announced that all BlackBerry services have been restored across the world, including internet, email, and BlackBerry Messenger. He reiterated the company's earlier statements that a hardware failure in Europe is what caused the outage, and that failure caused a backup in the system, creating service problems for users in other parts of the world. RIM pointed out that its services have had 99.97 percent uptime over the past 18 months, though that fact is probably not all that comforting to the users who have experienced outages for nearly four days. Based on Google Maps, the original app was very slow and lacked the functionality found on other platforms. RIM apologizes for BlackBerry outage, doesn't know when service will be fully restored Posted: 13 Oct 2011 05:29 AM PDT RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis has taken to video to personally apologize for the downtime that BlackBerry users have suffered this week, and promises that RIM is working around the clock to bring the service back to its fully operational state.
