Mozilla Firefox Mobile "Fennec" alpha browser now available for Android, Nokia N900 Posted: 27 Aug 2010 09:58 AM PDT Mozilla has put out an alpha release of the next version of its Firefox Mobile browser, code named Fennec, for Android and Nokia N900 smartphones. Fennec for Android requires Android 2.0 or later and 30MB of available internal storage. There are both ARMv7 and ARMv5 CPU optimized builds available. U.S. Cellular HTC Desire Android smartphone now available Posted: 27 Aug 2010 08:24 AM PDT Today U.S. Cellular announced that it is now offering the HTC Desire, an Android 2.1 powered smartphone with a 3.7-inch touchscreen GPS, WiFi, and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. HTC DROID Incredible Android 2.2 Froyo update rolling out Posted: 27 Aug 2010 08:10 AM PDT Verizon Wireless has announced, via its Twitter account, that the HTC DROID Incredible's Android 2.2 rollout is beginning today. Android 2.2 should speed up the device's performance, and adds a number of new features, including the ability to store apps on a microSD card, and install multiple app updates at once. Verizon may also offer the wireless hotspot feature on the device, although it's unclear if that's supported just yet. Intel close to purchasing chipmaker Infineon Posted: 27 Aug 2010 06:40 AM PDT Intel may be finalizing a deal with Infineon, a smartphone chip maker whose products have powered the iPhone, IDG is reporting. The two companies could seal a deal this week, and Infineon is reportedly looking for $1.91 billion. IDG says that Broadcom and Samsung are also interested in purchasing Infineon, although Intel is expected to win the bid. Read the full story here. |
MetroPCS launching 4G LTE network next month, Samsung says Posted: 27 Aug 2010 06:36 AM PDT According to a Samsung executive, MetroPCS will launch its long term evolution (LTE) 4G network next month, making its mark as the first U.S. wireless carrier to launch a commercial LTE network. Samsung's Jaebeom Choi, vice president of systems research and development, told The Wall Street Journal that the network will debut in Las Vegas and Dallas in September. The Samsung Craft, a 4G LTE phone, is expected to launch in tandem with the service. Read the full story here. |

Verizon eyes Alaska for LTE 4G rollout Posted: 27 Aug 2010 05:29 AM PDT Verizon, with its eyes set on rolling out its upcoming long term evolution (LTE) 4G network in Alaska, has placed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to purchase a block of wireless spectrum from a company called Triad. According to Fierce Wireless, Verizon is interested in buying the 700MHz C block spectrum license, which Triad paid $1.8 million for in 2008. The 700MHz spectrum would allow Verizon to offer its full gamut of services in Alaska, including an LTE network. Verizon doesn't currently offer wireless services in Alaska (without roaming). Monthly cell phone plans have dropped 50 percent since 1999 Posted: 27 Aug 2010 05:22 AM PDT According to a new Government Accountability Office report, which analyzed the mobile phone industry, cell phone plans have been halved since 1999. Despite a decrease in prices, coverage has increased. The report also found that 40 percent of U.S. households now rely on wireless devices.
