Dell Streak Android smartphone to get Android 2.2 "Froyo" upgrade

According to a blog post by Dell's "chief blogger," Lionel Menchaca, Dell plans to update the Streak to Android 2.2 from its current Android 1.6 firmware, skipping Android 2.1. The Dell Streak is AT&T's latest smartphone, which has a large 5-inch display and is often viewed as a tablet-like device.

Vodafone U.K. launches Mobile WiFi hotspot product

Today Vodafone U.K. launched a new product called the Mobile WiFi. The device is akin to the MiFi devices in the United States, in that it provides a WiFi signal, using Vodafone's 3G network, that can be used by up to five devices. The product sports up to 4 hours of non-stop battery life and built-in storage for file sharing. It is manufactured by Huawei. It's free with a minimum £25 ($38.90) monthly plan.

Apple hires near field communications expert

Apple recently hired Benjamin Vigier, a near field communications (NFC) expert, according to Near Field Communications World. Vigier has focused on NFC developments since 2004, and worked with Bouygues Telecom, a French carrier, and Sandisk. He also worked on barcode payment systems while employed by mFoundry for both PayPal and Starbucks. A possible NFC equipped iPhone could mean the device would be able to be used for mobile payments.

AT&T Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android smartphone now available

AT&T's latest Android smartphone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, is now available online and in AT&T stores. The device is priced at $149.99 with a 2-year AT&T contract. The Xperia X10 sports a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor, Android 1.6, a custom Sony Ericsson user interface, and an 8.1 MP camera with auto-focus and a single LED flash.
