Rogers now offering 3G capable BlackBerry Curve 9300 and Motorola Flipout smartphones Posted: 04 Aug 2010 12:41 PM PDT Canada's Rogers Wireless has just added two new smartphones to its roster, the Motorola Flipout and RIM's BlackBerry Curve 9300. The Flipout is a cool QWERTY keyboard packing phone that has a unique swivel to expose its 5-row keyboard. The device features a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display and supports GSM/HSPA/WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity. The Motorola Flipout will be available for $29.99 with a three-year service agreement or $374.99 retail. The BlackBerry Curve 9300 smartphone offers a 2.4-inch display screen, 2mp camera/camcorder, GPS, and supports GSM/HSPA/WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity. It is the first Curve model to support 3G data. NPD: Android sales surpass iPhone, BlackBerry in Q2, names top 5 devices Posted: 04 Aug 2010 11:42 AM PDT Today NPD released a new report which found that 33 percent of all smartphones bought during the second quarter were Android devices. 28 percent of the smartphones purchased were BlackBerry devices, and 22 percent were iPhones. "For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers," Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD, said. The Top 5 selling Android smartphoens during the quarter were the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Hero, and HTC Droid Eris. Read the full story here. |
Google adds search history link for Android, iPhone Posted: 04 Aug 2010 11:25 AM PDT Google recently announced a new search feature for Android and iPhone users. After logging in to Google and visiting m.google.com, you'll now see a "History" link at the bottom of the page which will show you your most recent searches that you've performed while logged in, even if you searched from a laptop or a desktop. Over 27 million Symbian devices shipped during Q2 2010 Posted: 04 Aug 2010 11:16 AM PDT Research firm Canalys recently released a new report which revealed that over 27 million Symbian powered devices were shipped during the second quarter of 2010, a milestone for The Symbian Foundation. That figure equates to about 300,000 devices per day, 207 devices a minute, or over three devices sold every second. "The fact we continue to outsell our competitors by such large margins, combined with all the feature commitments and developments published on our roadmaps, make us highly confident in our outlook and we will continue to embrace the challenges ahead," Lee M. Video: RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 video hands-on Posted: 04 Aug 2010 11:08 AM PDT A quick, and noisy, look at the new BlackBerry Torch 9800 from the AT&T launch event. The phone felt a bit laggy, but was running pre-production software according to RIM (even though it ships in 8 days). Hackers release iPhone 4 carrier unlock for jailbroken phones Posted: 04 Aug 2010 09:21 AM PDT Today hackers released a piece of software that lets jailbroken iPhone 4 owners unlock their device for use on other GSM carriers. Indonesia considers BlackBerry ban Posted: 04 Aug 2010 09:13 AM PDT Days after the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia said that they were considering banning BlackBerry smartphones, Indonesia piped in to add that it's also considering a ban, according to the AP. "We don't know whether data being sent through BlackBerrys can be intercepted or read by third parties outside the country," Gatot Dewabroto, spokesman for Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Information, said. Motorola and Verizon working on Android powered TV tablet Posted: 04 Aug 2010 06:33 AM PDT Motorola and Verizon are working on a new tablet that could debut this fall, according to the Financial Times. The device is said to sport a 10-inch display and is powered by the Android operating system. Sources have said that the tablet will play into Verizon's FiOS offering. Cricket signs wholesale agreement with Sprint, can now offer service in new markets Posted: 04 Aug 2010 06:03 AM PDT Cricket Communications announced that it has penned a 5 year wholesale resale agreement with Sprint that will allow Cricket to act as a Sprint MVNO in markets that Cricket does not currently serve. This is different from a roaming agreement in that it will allow Cricket to actively market in parts of the country where it has no network infrastructure, rather than merely allowing its customers to roam onto Sprint's network when out of their home markets. Pantech ditching Samsung AMOLED displays in smartphones, for now Posted: 04 Aug 2010 06:01 AM PDT Today a Pantech source told The Korea Herald that it does not plan to use AMOLED displays in its upcoming smartphones. Pantech attributed the switch to AMOLED display shortages, an issue that has delayed smartphones such as the HTC Incredible in the United States. Samsung's Mobile Display unit makes the AMOLED panels, and Pantech said that it could use the screens again during the second half of 2011 when Samsung introduces the latest generation of its displays.
