RIM reassures customers of BlackBerry data security

Research in Motion (RIM) today told customers that their data is secure, noting that "no one, including RIM, [can] access" encrypted customer data, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. "RIM assures customers that it will not compromise the integrity and security of the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution," the letter to customers said. RIM's affirmation of its security comes just a day after the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, said that they would ban email, instant messaging, and web browsing on BlackBerry devices, fearing that the secure networks could be used by terrorists.

Android market share jumps in first half of 2010, Apple iPhone still most desired

New market data from Nielsen found that Android had the largest market share out of the phones sold during the past six months, with a ten percent increase from the quarter prior. However, Apple's iPhone still remains the most desired phone on the market.

AT&T reveals Mobile Barcode Services for Android and BlackBerry smartphones

Today AT&T launched a new suite of apps called Mobile Barcode Services that can be used to read barcodes on BlackBerry and Android smartphones. AT&T Code Scanner lets users scan 2D and 1D barcodes in magazines, online, and in stores to view more information on given products and services. AT&T Create-a-Code lets users create their own barcodes that can be used to direct friends or family to v-cards, a Facebook account, a blog, and more. Verizon Wireless: Motorola DROID Android 2.2 update won't support tethering or hotspot features

Verizon Wireless has confirmed that Android 2.2 will land on the Motorola DROID. However, a Verizon Wireless spokesperson told Phone Scoop that the update will not include support for the native Android 2.2 WiFi hotspot feature, or support for tethering the device for use as a modem. "The Droid by Motorola doesn't have [the] hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot. With tethering there is no Connection on the PC side that will allow you to tether the device so the answer is that option isn't part of this update," Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney told Phone Scoop. Android 2.2 is expected to roll out to the DROID beginning this week.

Windows Phone 7 landing in Europe in October, United States in November

In a recent presentation, Microsoft's chief operating officer, Kevin Turner, revealed that initial Windows Phone 7 smartphones will begin landing in Europe this October and in the United States the following month. Turner also stated that Microsoft would be "back in the game," while discussing the smartphone market.

The LG HBM-585 is a very thin and light Bluetooth headset that ships with included car charging accessories. It features decent noise reduction capabilities, and is quite good looking. It will be available in the U.S. soon for somewhere around $60.

Samsung Epic 4G teaser site launched by Sprint

Over the weekend Sprint launched a teaser site for its upcoming Samsung Epic 4G, a Galaxy S class Android smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Apple iOS 4 jailbreak available, a one-step process to unlock your iPhone 4

Over the weekend a system for "jailbreaking" the iPhone 4 was released on the site JailBreakMe.com. To unlock an Apple iPhone 4 smartphone, one merely needs to point the phone's browser to www.JailBreakMe.com and follow the single step instructions. This solution works only on iOS 4 and iOS 4.01 - it won't work if the phone is running any of the iOS 4.1 betas.

AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile to test mobile credit card service with Discover

Today Bloomberg is reporting that AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile USA are teaming up with Discover and Barclays to test a new near-field communications (NFC) payment service in four U.S. cities, including Atlanta. Barclays would serve as a bank to help manage accounts that would be processed using Discover payments. NFC would allow users to purchase goods using their smartphones, in a similar tap-to-go fashion that some credit cards use today. It wasn't noted when the trials would start.

PacketVideo bought by NTT DoCoMo

NextWave Wireless has announced that it sold its 65 percent interest in PacketVideo to NTT DoCoMo. NextWave sold the first 35 percent to NTT DoCoMo in July 2009. PacketVideo provides multimedia solutions for mobile phones and also creates enterprise technologies that are used by U.S. wireless operators. Dr. James C. Brailean has stepped down as the CEO, COO, and President of NextWave Wireless and will serve as the President and CEO of PacketVideo. The completion of the transaction is expected to occur during the third quarter of 2010.

Sprint 4G WiMAX network spreads to Delaware, Florida, Michigan, new markets in California

Today Sprint announced that its 4G WiMAX network has spread to new markets in California, and is also now available in Delaware, Florida, and Michigan. The service was activated in Modesto California, Stockton, California, Jacksonville, Florida, Wilmington, Delaware, and Grand Rapids Michigan. With those markets, Sprint 4G is now available in a total of 48 metropolitan areas.
