LG to release 10 new smartphones by year's end, sell 5 million devices Posted: 19 Aug 2010 05:02 AM PDT In an interview with Dow Jones Newswires, Chang Ma, vice president of marketing for LG's mobile devices division, said that LG plans to release 10 new smartphones and sell 5 million devices, by the end of the year. LG plans to offer its flagship Optimus One and the Optimus family beginning in September during a relaunch, and the manufacturer has 120 operators lined up to offer its devices. LG hopes that the Optimus One will be a "gateway phone," for inexperienced smartphone users. RIM looking to buy mobile ad network Posted: 19 Aug 2010 04:52 AM PDT Research in Motion (RIM) is interested in buying a mobile ad network of its own, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The smartphone maker has been eying Millennial Media, a mobile ad company based in Baltimore, Maryland, although the two haven't been able to reach an acquisition agreement. Google Acquired AdMob for $750 million in November 2009, and Apple purchased Quattro Wireless this past January. Millennial Media has been seeking a figure between $400 and $500 million, but sources have told The Wall Street Journal that RIM believes Apple and Google both overpaid for their mobile ad networks. Verizon Wireless trialing $99 unlimited mobile plans Posted: 18 Aug 2010 12:41 PM PDT Verizon Wireless may be planning an all-inclusive unlimited data, text, and talk plan along the lines of Sprint's Simply Everything Plan, according to analyst firm Current Analysis. Market testing is currently being carried out in Los Angeles and San Diego. According to Fierce Wireless, Verizon Wireless is testing a $69.99 talk and text plan paired with a $29.99 unlimited data tariff, for the total $99.99 monthly fee, which is on a par with Sprint's $99 Simply Everything plan. Apple iPhone 4 preorders halt South Korean distributor website Posted: 18 Aug 2010 10:14 AM PDT Apple iPhone 4 preorders began in South Korea today on KT Corp's website, a distributor of the smartphone. According to AFP, the website had over 110,000 visitors in nine hours, which was enough to jam the site. "Our online shop server was jammed instantly as too many clients placed orders simultaneously," Jin Byung-Kwon, a KT Corp spokesperson, told AFP. The distributor also noted that the number of preorders for the iPhone 4 surpassed those for the iPhone 3GS when it made its debut. 850,000 iPhone 4 devices have been sold in South Korea since it launched 9 months ago. T-Mobile names Android-powered G2 as its first HSPA+ smartphone Posted: 18 Aug 2010 05:52 AM PDT In July, T-Mobile launched a teaser page for a new smartphone, that it said would be the first HSPA+ smartphone on the market. That teaser page has been updated with more details, including the phone's name, the G2, and proof that the device will be powered by the Android operating system. T-Mobile says it will share details on the phone in the coming weeks. The original G1 was manufactured by HTC, so it makes sense that the G2 would be too, and it could be linked to an announcement during HTC's upcoming September 15th London event. HBO Go mobile app coming to Apple iPad, other mobile devices Posted: 18 Aug 2010 05:45 AM PDT HBO's co-president, Eric Kessler, has said that it's unlikely HBO will reach a deal with Netflix to offer HBO content, Bloomberg recently reported. However, the article also pointed out that HBO is planning to offer its HBO Go on-demand service on mobile devices. HBO Go will provide 800 hours of TV shows. The software will be free for HBO subscribers "through all major cable systems," as well as on the Apple iPad and other mobile devices, according to Kessler. News Corp. planning national digital newspaper for mobile devices Posted: 18 Aug 2010 05:30 AM PDT News Corp. is planning a new digital newspaper aimed at mobile devices, such as the iPad and cell phones, according to the L.A. Times. News Corp., headed by Rupert Murdoch, is creating the newspaper as a means to gain readership from readers that rely on mobile devices for their news, and the company hopes to compete directly with the New York Times and USA Today, among other publications. "We'll have young people reading newspapers. It's a real game changer in the presentation of news," Murdoch said during an August 4th conference call. Sources told the L.A.
