Cricket Sanyo Zio M6000 smartphone to cost $249.99

Cricket recently announced the pricing for its first Android smartphone, the Sanyio Zio by Kyocera. The device is launching soon and is available with an all-inclusive $55 Android service plan. The Sanyo Zio sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, and WiFi.

Cricket BlackBerry Curve 8530 available for $279.99, ships by August 6th

Today Cricket posted a "coming soon" page for the BlackBerry Curve 8530, a QWERTY smartphone with a 2 megapixel camera, 3G and WiFi connectivity, and more. The phone will be available for $279.99 with a $20 online discount in Cricket Markets, and plans are $60 per month. The device is expected to ship by August 6th.

China Unicom to sell WiFi enabled Apple iPhone

China Unicom will sell Apple's iPhone with WiFi enabled, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The Chinese government typically requires that the WiFi connectivity option on iPhones to be disabled. China Unicom currently only carries the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS, and is discussions with Apple to offer both the iPad and the latest iPhone 4.

Today Barnes & Noble announced that its NOOK Android eReader application has been updated with new features. The latest version, for Android 2.1 devices, adds four themes for page and text color, including "day," "night," "sepia," and "butter." Among performance enhancements, there are also new margin and brightness control options, a new library search function, as well as the ability to read right-free ePub files side-loaded into your My Documents folder. The application can be stored on an SD card on phones running Android 2.2 Froyo.

MetroPCS posts higher revenue in Q2 2010, LTE 4G on schedule for 2H 2010

Today MetroPCS released its second quarter 2010 earnings. The wireless carrier reported total revenues of $1 billion, up 18 percent from Q2 of 2009. The carrier also added 1.4 million subscribers during the past 12 months. "We are on track for our initial 4G LTE launch in selected metropolitan areas in the second half of this year. Our goal is to provide our pay-in-advance subscribers a 4G experience equivalent to that which will be enjoyed by traditional post-pay customers," Roger D. Linquist, Chairman, President and CEO of MetroPCS, said.

Apple to patch iOS Safari security hole

Apple said that it has found, and fixed, a security issue in iOS 4 that allowed the iPhone to be jailbroken just using the onboard Safari web browser. "We're aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update," Apple told CNET. Apple did not clarify when the fix would be pushed out.

Sharp 3D display equipped smartphone coming later this year

Sharp, the company behind the recent Sharp FX on AT&T, past Sidekick devices, and the Microsoft Kin, is planning to release a smartphone later this year with a 3D display, according to Reuters. The device could also sport a 3D camera capable of recording 3D video. In April, Sharp showed off 3-inch 3D cell phone displays and said that it hoped to manufacture them during the first half of fiscal 2010. At the time, Sharp's executive managing officer said "the arrival of mobile 3D is just around the corner." The mobile 3D displays do not require special glasses.

Facebook extends privacy controls to mobile devices

Facebook has announced that its users can now monitor and control privacy controls from anywhere, including from browser-enabled mobile devices. To monitor your privacy controls from a phone, simply visit m.facebook.com/privacy, and you'll be able to edit who can see the content you post, read through a privacy guide, and more. Facebook says it's rolling out the changes right now, so if they aren't live yet, they will be shortly.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphone to sell at local Wal-Mart stores

RIM's latest uber-messaging phone, the BlackBerry Torch 9800, looks to be headed to local Wal-Mart store shelves. The Wal-Mart website that the smartphone is coming soon and is expected to launch in August 2010. With the device launching on AT&T on August 12, we expect the Torch will hit Wal-Mart soon after.
