Microsoft announces 50 Xbox LIVE Windows Phone 7 titles

Today during the Gamescom conference in Germany, Microsfot announced 50 titles that will be released for the Xbox LIVE gaming platform on Windows Phone 7. The games will offer try-before-you-buy demos, leader-boards, turn-based mutliplayer support, achievments, and more. A host of developers from Digital Chocolate to Konami and Gameloft are on board, and titles include popular games such as Assassin's Creed, Halo Waypoint, and Splinter Cell Conviction. Google responds to Oracle, calls lawsuit "baseless"

Last week Oracle filed a lawsuit against Google alleging that the search giant was infringing on seven Java patents and related copyrights. Google recently responded. In a statement to USA Today, Google spokesperson Aaron Zaamost said, "We are disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Google and the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit. The open-source Java community goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the web a better place. We will strongly defend open-source standards and will continue to work with the industry to develop the Android platform."

BlackBerry OS 6.0.0.161 leaked for Torch 9800

A new operating system version for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is now unofficially available. OS 6.9.9.161 was leaked recently. Details on what the update includes are currently unknown, but RIM did note the leak on its official BlackBerry News Twitter account.

Qualcomm to ship dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon smartphone processors in Q4

Qualcomm plans to ship its next generation Snapdragon smartphone processors during the fourth quarter of this year, according to IDG News Service. Qualcomm's new dual core chips, dubbed the QSD8672, sport a 1.5GHz clockspeed. That's 500GHz faster than the popular Snapdragon processor in some of today's hottest smartphones, including the Nexus One and HTC EVO 4G. Qualcomm's vice president of product management, Mark Frankel, thinks some manufacturers could even have smartphones running the new chip on store shelves by Christmas.

RIM giving India partial access to Messenger services, talks over mail access continue

Research in Motion (RIM) has agreed to give India's government partial access to its BlackBerry Messenger services, Reuters is reporting. India has threatened to ban BlackBerry services if RIM doesn't comply to its requests. RIM will give partial access by September 1st, with full access to follow by the end of the year, a government source said. RIM and India's government are expected to hold continued talks over access to RIM's enterprise email. RIM has said that it works with governments to meet legal standards while respecting the privacy of its customers.

Nokia N8 U.S. pre-orders begin, "end of September" arrival

Preorders for Nokia's flagship smartphone, the Symbian^3 powered N8, have begun on its U.S. website. The phone is available for $549.00 and is expected to arrive by the "end of September." WiMAX 2 could roll out as soon as 2012

The WiMAX 2 standard could be finalized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as early as this November, according to Declan Byrne, marketing director of the WiMAX Forum. The standard, which will be known as 802.16m, could roll out to end users during 2012, and it will offer (theoretical) "average downlink speeds of more than 100Mbps," according to Computer World, which is a great deal faster than the speeds we get with Sprint and Clearwire's current WiMAX network. Such speeds would make it a contender against long term evolution (LTE) 4G networks that will be deployed by Verizon Wireless and AT&T by that time frame.

HTC outs update to fix HD mini "intermittent audio muting" issue

HTC has pushed out an update for the HD mini that fixes "intermittent audio muting." The fix applies to ROM versions less than or equal to 1.36.XXX.X for all SKUs, except Vodafone Spain. The update is available on HTC's HD mini support site.

Sprint launches Football Live application

Today Sprint announced a new application for football fans called Sprint Football Live. The application provides live game telecasts of college football games from ESPN Mobile TV, a real time "Game Center" for pro and college games with stats, scoring summaries, and play-by-play, and quick access to scores and news. The service is free to Sprint Everything Data plan subscribers. Sprint Football Live is available on most Sprint handsets, and all of those that offer Sprint TV.

ASUS to launch $399 Eee Pad Android tablet in March

Speaking to reporters, ASUS' CEO Jerry Shen said that ASUS plans to launch an Android powered Eee Pad tablet in March, 2011. The device is expected to retail for less than $399. This tablet would be ASUS' first Android tablet, and will follow in the already announced footsteps of a Windows 7 Home Premium 12-inch touchscreen tablet that's expected to launch in December or January. Shen didn't discuss the specs of the Android tablet.

MagicJack to offer free smartphone and iPad calling, femtocell plans on hold

MagicJack, best known for its television commercials advertising free internet calls, is planning a new application that will provide users with free calls to landlines and cellphones in the U.S. The application, which could launch next week, will run on Windows and Mac computers. There are also plans for a September launch of smartphone versions of the software for iOS, BlackBerry, and Android devices, though the company isn't sure if it will allow calls over Wi-Fi only, or also allow 3G calls. MagicJack's CEO, Dan Borislow, said its plans for a femtocell are now on hold until the company can work with a carrier partner.
