Oracle sues Google for Java copyright and patent infringement

Oracle has filed a lawsuit against Google in a U.S. District Court in Northern California. Oracle is seeking damages from Google for "continued acts of infringement" and accuses the search giant of infringing on "seven Java patents and related copyrights," according to The Wall Street Journal. Java is used in Android smartphones, among other devices.

Following in Vodafone UK's footsteps, O2 has also decided to offer Apple's uber-smartphone, the iPhone 4, as a Pay & Go option. No lengthy contracts are needed, just 595GBP for the 32GB iPhone 4 model or 495GBP for the 16GB variant. The Apple iPhone smartphone sports a 5mp camera, an HD video camcorder, a front facing camera for FaceTime video chatting, multi-tasking, and a brilliant high res display screen.

Sprint accepting Samsung Epic 4G Galaxy S smartphone pre-orders

Starting today Sprint is accepting reservations for its upcoming Samsung Epic 4G smartphone, an Android 2.1 powered device with a 1GHz processor and the ability to run on Sprint's 4G WiMAX network. The phone features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and is based upon the Samsung Galaxy S line of smartphones.

Here's a quick demo of the new Chrome to Phone and Voice Search applications for Android 2.2 Froyo smartphones. Chrome to Phone pushes information from your browser to your phone, while Voice Search lets you send text messages, play music, and do all sorts of things with only voice commands.

Sprint SVP of product and technology development leaving firm

Sprint's senior vice president of product and technology development, Kevin Packingham, is leaving Sprint on Monday according to The Wall Street Journal. Packingham was responsible for leading the HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Epic 4G developments. He will be heading up a new firm in Kansas City, according to a source.

Google "Chrome to Phone" browser extension for Android announced

Today Google announced a new extension for its Chrome browser called "Chrome to Phone." Chrome to Phone adds a button to your Google Chrome browser that lets you send a web page, YouTube video, map, or phone number down to your Android 2.2 Froyo phone. The extension is available on Google's Chrome website and from the Android Market.

Google Voice Actions search for Android 2.2 Froyo launched

Today Google announced Voice Actions for Android. The new application lets users search and interact with their Android phones by speaking. Users can send text messages by speaking "send text to [Todd] [message]" for example, or listen to music by speaking "listen to [artist/song/album]." It works with everything from directions, to calling businesses and contacts, viewing maps, visiting websites, writing notes, writing emails, and of course, searching Google. Google Actions is available for Android 2.2 Froyo devices, and is available on Google's Mobile website.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 touchscreen QWERTY slider review

BlackBerry Bold 9650 by RIM launches on Alltel

Alltel announced today that it is now offering RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9650 smartphone both online and in retail stores. The 9650 offers a 2.4-inch HVGA display with an optical trackpad for navigation, a 3.2 megapixel camera/camcorder, Wi-Fi, and global roaming capabilities. The BlackBerry Bold is available now at Alltel retail stores and online at shopalltel.com for $149.99, after a $100 mail-in rebate and service agreement.

India gives RIM until August 31 to address BlackBerry security concerns, threatens ban

The government of India has given smartphone maker Research In Motion until August 31 to deal with the Indian government's security concerns with the company's secure BlackBerry network that is utilized by the company's smartphones. India wants access to the encrypted data that flows across the network, just like Saudi Arabia and the UAE have recently demanded. If its demands are not met, India will shut down BlackBerry services.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 now available from Bell Canada

RIM's recently announced 3G-capable BlackBerry, the Curve 3G 9300, is now available from Canada's Bell Mobility. The new Curve offers the speedy 3G and WiFi connectivity as well as an optical trackpad. Support for the new BlackBerry 6 operating system has also been confirmed. The BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 is on sale today for $49.95 with a three-year service commitment or $349.95 retail.

J.D. Power ranks T-Mobile USA #1 in Retail Sales Satisfaction study

Today J.D. Power and Associates released its 2010 Wireless Retail Sales Satisfaction Study Volume 2 report. The survey was conducted between January 2010 and June 2010, and found that T-Mobile ranked highest in retail sales satisfaction. The report also found some other compelling tidbits worth reading.

Double Flip feature added to Google Gesture Search 1.2 for Android

Google has updated its Gesture Search application, which allows you to search by writing out gestures on the screen, with a new Double Flip feature. The feature lets you flip your phone sideways, then back up again, to automatically activate the Gesture Search functionality. According to Tech Crunch, you can also adjust the sensitivity of Double Flip to prevent accidental activation. The new application is available on Google's Gesture Search website.

RIM: All BlackBerry OS 6 smartphones to offer consistent user experience

RIM has said that devices running the BlackBerry 6 operating system will sport the same features and applications, despite whether or not the phones have both a touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard, as is the case with the Torch 9800. Speaking to Phone Scoop, RIM said that this will be the case for the Bold 9700, Bold 9650, and the Pearl 9100, which will all be updated to BlackBerry 6. Users without touchscreens will simply interact with the OS differently, most likely with the optical pad. RIM's new WebKit browser will only be available for BlackBerry 6 phones.

TweetDeck for Android beta launching today

A beta version of the popular social networking app known as TweetDeck is set to become available for Android smartphone users today, according to the developer's Twitter account. The application integrates Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Foursquare, Google Buzz, and MySpace into one application interface. Previously the application was only available for desktop computers and Apple iOS devices, like the iPhone and iPad.

Gartner: Cell phone sales up 13.8 percent for Q2, HTC enters top ten in market share rankings

Gartner released its sales and market share rankings for cell phones and smartphones in the second quarter of 2010, showing global growth of 13.8 percent. Nokia and Symbian maintain their top spots, but HTC enters the top 10 manufacturers list and Android posts 9.5x market share growth.

Earlier this week Verizon Wireless announced the Motorola DROID 2, its latest Android powered smartphone. The new phone, which will be available in a Star Wars R2-D2 flavor next month, goes on sale in Verizon Wireless retail shops nationwide today for $199.99, after mail-in rebate, when picked up with a 2 year contract.
