T-Mobile USA launches Android Device Tune-up Beta application Posted: 17 Jun 2010 06:05 AM PDT T-Mobile has launched a new application for Android devices called Device Tune-Up Beta. The application runs in the background and will automatically shut down applications that aren't being used, which helps battery life and overall phone performance. Fujitsu to control Toshiba's mobile unit Posted: 17 Jun 2010 05:47 AM PDT Fujitsu will take over Toshiba's mobile unit, the two companies said today, after reaching an agreement to merge the mobile sectors of both firms. "Our handset business is profitable and strong as it is, but we can't assume it will remain so," Etsuro Yamada, a Fujitsu spokesperson said. European Union investigating Qualcomm in antitrust case Posted: 17 Jun 2010 05:37 AM PDT The European Commission is investigating Qualcomm in an antitrust case, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. The case is currently in a "fact finding stage," and has its roots in a complaint from Icera, a wireless chip maker base in the U.K. Icera claims Qualcomm has "engaged in anticompetitive activity," Qualcomm said. The Wall Street Journal says the complaint involves how Qualcomm links other patents to its own in order to increase its own sales. Read the full story here. |

The HTC Desire smartphone features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, runs the Android 2.1 OS, and sports a lovely 3.7in AMOLED touchscreen display. AT&T halts Apple iPhone 4 preorders Posted: 16 Jun 2010 09:00 AM PDT Today AT&T said that the preorder sales for the iPhone 4 were 10 times that of the iPhone 3GS first day sales, and that it is going to suspend preorders until it fulfills the orders it has already received. "The availability of additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking preorders. We are working hard to bring iPhone 4 to as many of our customers as soon as possible." "Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple's new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. San Francisco cellphone radiation law passed, requires retailers to post SAR ratings Posted: 16 Jun 2010 08:18 AM PDT Today San Francisco passed a new cellphone radiation law that requires anyone selling mobile phones to also post the specific absorption rate (SAR) ratings (the amount of radiation a phone emits) on next to the phone for sale. According to The New York Times, this has the CTIA a bit worried that this will misinform customers into thinking that one phone is safer than another. "We believe there is an overwhelming consensus of scientific belief that there is no adverse health effect by using wireless devices," John Walls, a CTIA spokesperson, said. HTC Hero Android 2.0 Eclair update coming in June Posted: 16 Jun 2010 06:27 AM PDT Today HTC announced that it will update its HTC Hero to Android 2.0 "Eclair" at the end of June. The upgrade will roll out in two parts, the first of which should occur this week. The second part will come at the end of the month and will wipe the data on the handset, so be sure to backup all of your media and contacts ahead of time. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphones to receive Android 2.1 upgrade Posted: 16 Jun 2010 06:23 AM PDT Today Sony Ericsson announced that its Xperia X10 smartphones, the X10, X10 mini, and X10 mini pro will be upgraded to the latest Android operating system, 2.1. The upgrades are set to take place in Q3 of this year. Verizon Wireless Motorola DROID X Android smartphone revealed in photos Posted: 16 Jun 2010 06:18 AM PDT Yesterday we reported that verizon Wireless was set to debut a new DROID smartphone. Shortly after, Engadget posted pictures of the new device, dubbed the Motorola DROID X. The phone sports a 4.4-inch display with an 854 x 480 resolution and resembles the HTC EVO 4G.
