Verizon Wireless to expand Skype mobile offering beyond smartphones

Verizon Wireless said today that it will expand Skype mobile, which is currently available on 12 smartphones, to more devices including 3G feature phones later this year. It will also add Spanish, Korean, and simple Chinese support, as well as a new enhanced user interface with drop-down menus that offer flags for shortcuts to international dialing.

RIM and Motorola settle patent disagreement

Today Motorola and Research in Motion (RIM) settled a patent infringement dispute by agreeing to a cross-licensing agreement. RIM will pay royalties to Motorola, although the exact terms of the settlement aren't known. In January we reported that Motorola was suing RIM over five patents involving WiFi technologies, application management, user interfaces, and power management controls.

Vodafone U.K. begins Samsung i9000 Galaxy S Android smartphone preorders

Today Vodafone U.K. is beginning to offer preorders for the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S, and Android powered smartphone with a 5 megapixel camera and a 4-inch touchscreen. The device will be free with a minimum monthly contract of £35 ($51.35). Vodafone U.K. expects the Samsung Galaxy S to be available starting on June 15th. Adobe: Flash on 53 percent of smartphones in 2012

Adobe recently said that it believes its Flash Player will be on over 53 percent of the smartphones that ship in 2012, or a total of 250 million smartphones. That is, of course, even without Apple's support. Flash is expected to be available on RIM BlackBerry devices, Nokia's Symbian Platform, Palm (HP) webOS, and Microsoft Windows Phone 7 devices. It will first broadly be available on Android 2.2 "Froyo."

T-Mobile U.K. pre-registration for iPhone 4 details begins

Today T-Mobile U.K. launched a new website that customers can visit to sign up for pre-ordering information, prices, plans, and more. T-Mobile U.K. has already said that it will offer the iPhone 4, although a date has yet to be announced.

O2 kills unlimited data package ahead of iPhone 4 launch

Today O2 announced that it will no longer offer an unlimited data package, and will instead offer data packages between 500MB and 1GB that cost between £25 ($36.48) and £60 ($87.56) depending on your text and minute plans. If a customer goes over, they'll be charged a "Bolt On" fee for an additional 500MB of data which costs £5 ($7.29), or an additional 1GB of data for £10 ($14.59). "97 percent of O2 smartphone customers would not need to buy additional data allowances," O2 said in a statement. The new plans follow AT&T's recent announcement that it is eliminating its unlimited data plans.

LG to bolster Android presence with 20 new smartphones

LG plans to release 20 new Android phones around the globe, before the end of the year, in an effort to bolster its smartphone presence, The Korea Times reported. In the United States, both LG and Samsung have just a single Android powered handset, and there's large speculation that a second Samsung device, the Galaxy S, will land shortly. Update: LG has written to clarify that it will release 20 new smartphones, but that they will run either Android, Windows Mobile, or Linux. It will not release 20 new Android phones.

Hackers access email addresses of 114,000 iPad owners
