Intel kills MeeGo, folds it into the Tizen project Posted: 28 Sep 2011 05:13 AM PDT The MeeGo smartphone operating system has had a storied past, starting as a combination of Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin systems before being all but abandoned by Nokia in favor of Windows Phone. Now, the next chapter in the Maemo/Moblin/MeeGo story starts, as Intel has announced that it is killing the MeeGo name and folding the project into a new open source, Linux-based OS called Tizen. The carrier is said to already be deploying and testing the hardware necessary for such a network. Sprint already has a 4G network, but its Clearwire-provided network runs on WiMAX technology. T-Mobile announces Windows Phone 7.5 update for HTC HD7 Posted: 27 Sep 2011 01:26 PM PDT T-Mobile has announced via its official Twitter account that the Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" update for the HTC HD7 begins to roll out to users today. The update brings along a number of improvements, including multitasking, Twitter and LinkedIn integration, and the new Internet Explorer 9 Mobile browser. Users will get a notification on their phones when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed through Microsoft's Zune software (a personal computer is required for installation of the update). Skype for iOS updated with Bluetooth headset support, in-app ads Posted: 27 Sep 2011 12:24 PM PDT Skype has pushed out an updated for its iOS app that adds Bluetooth headset support, a feature that has been inexplicably missing until now. The update also brings in-call video stabilization, but along with those useful features comes in-app advertising. You can avoid the ads if you have active Skype credits on your account, a subscription calling plan, or a Skype Premium account, but those who ride for free will have to tolerate an ad every once in a while. 90 percent of smartphone sales at T-Mobile are Android Posted: 27 Sep 2011 07:55 AM PDT During the GigaOm Mobilize conference yesterday, T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman revealed that Android devices make up 90 percent of the carrier's total smartphone sales. Looking at the carrier's lineup of devices, it might not be too shocking to hear that, but it certainly does not sound good for RIM's BlackBerry platform or Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. Apple's application for multi-touch trademark gets rejected once again Posted: 27 Sep 2011 07:29 AM PDT One of the most revolutionary user interface features that debuted with the original iPhone back in 2007 was the ability to interact with the more than one finger on the screen at the same time, better known as multi-touch. Apple applied for a trademark on the name "multi-touch" long before the iPhone actually hit shelves, on January 9, 2007. BlackBerry Torch 9810 smartphone now available with Three UK Posted: 27 Sep 2011 07:04 AM PDT Three UK is now offering RIM's BlackBerry Torch 9810 smartphone. The Torch 9810 features a 3.2-inch VGA resolution touchscreen, a slide-out portrait QWERTY keyboard, and the latest BlackBerry operating system, BlackBerry 7. The Torch 9810 is the successor to the 9800 from last year and mostly offers improvements under its hood, including a new speedy 1.2GHz processor, increased RAM of 768MB, and 8GB on on-board storage. The device also offers the capability to record 720p HD video, as well. Three UK is offering the new BlackBerry now for as low as 30 GBP with a qualifying plan.
