BlackBerry Torch 9850 all-touch smartphone now available from Verizon

Today Verizon Wireless is making the new BlackBerry Torch 9850 from Research In Motion available to its customers via its website. The Torch 9850 is the follow-up to Verizon's pair of Storm-branded all-touch BlackBerry smartphones. It features a large, 3.7-inch WVGA resolution display, a 1.2GHz processor, and the new BlackBerry 7 operating system. It is available online now for $199.99 with a 2-year agreement, and will be available in Verizon Wireless stores starting on September 15. Motorola DROID BIONIC 4G LTE smartphone now available from Verizon

After a long, nine-month wait since it was originally announced, the Motorola DROID BIONIC is now available for purchase from Verizon Wireless. The DROID BIONIC is Motorola's first 4G LTE smartphone, and it is the first LTE smartphone to sport a dual-core processor. It also has a 4.3-inch, qHD (540 x 960 pixel) display, an 8 megapixel rear camera, and a VGA front camera. The BIONIC costs $299.99 with a new two-year agreement. Verizon and Motorola are also offering a number of accessories that let users take advantage of Motorola's Webtop interface when the BIONIC is plugged into a TV or laptop-like accessory. SFPD investigating its role in Apple-led home search for missing iPhone 5

Google boosts HTC's case against Apple with transfer of patents

HTC has filed a lawsuit against Apple today, claiming infringements on smartphone patents. While this may sound like a story we have heard many times this year, there is a twist to it this time. According to Bloomberg, Google has "transferred" patents over to HTC so that it could make a claim against Apple.

RIM offers $100 gift card to those who own a BlackBerry smartphone and buy a PlayBook

RIM is offering an extra incentive to those who own a BlackBerry smartphone but have yet to pick up a PlayBook tablet. Owners of BlackBerry smartphones who purchase a PlayBook tablet between now and September 22 are entitled to a $100 prepaid MasterCard. The offer is limited to one per person and three per household, and customers must be over the age of 18. So, if you happen to own a BlackBerry smartphone and you haven't nabbed a PlayBook, now might be the best time to grab one.

Google chairman says Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android to debut in October or November

Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman and former CEO of Google, has let the cat out of the bag as to when we will see the next version of Android, code-named Ice Cream Sandwich, show up. Speaking at the Salesforce Dreamforce conference, Schmidt said that Ice Cream Sandwich would arrive in either October or November. We had expected to see Ice Cream Sandwich before the holidays, but Google has not confirmed any dates at this point. Schmidt's comment does line up with our expectations, though, and hopefully we will be able to learn more about Ice Cream Sandwich as we get closer to its expected due date.

Scientists double the capacity of wireless networks with full-duplex transmissions

Researchers at Rice University have developed a method of doubling a wireless network's capacity without requiring the use of any new towers. The technology uses full-duplex transmissions, and it could be utilized in future 4.5 and 5G networks.

Judge gives AT&T and DoJ until September 21 to work out a deal

A U.S. District Court Judge has given AT&T and the Department of Justice until September 21 to work out their issues and come up with a settlement plan. The Department of Justice recently sued to block the proposed purchase of T-Mobile by AT&T, citing that it was uncompetitive and bad for consumers.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread update hitting HTC DROID Incredible now

HTC promised that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the DROID Incredible would be coming in September, and it looks like some users are seeing the update show up on their phones already. The update bumps the Incredible up to Android 2.3.4, and includes a number of bug fixes with the new software. Anxious users can head to the About Phone section of the Software Update option in the Settings app to check if the update is ready for them.

Google expanded its Offers program to five more cities today. Originally launched in New York, Portland, and San Francisco, Offers is now available in Austin, Boston, Washington D.C., Denver, and Seattle. Offers is a daily-deal program similar to Groupon.
