Facebook for Android has been updated to version 1.7, and with the update comes a number of new features and fixes. Most notably, the status update composer and Profile view have been redesigned, and users now have greater control over privacy settings from their mobile devices.

AT&T announces $25 GoPhone pre-paid plan

AT&T has announced a new option for its GoPhone pre-paid customers that costs $25 per month. For that sum, customers can get 250 anytime minutes and unlimited messaging. Additionally, GoPhone customers will be able to buy 250 minutes of international calling for $10 per month. Finally, GoPhone users can now roam in Canada, with rates costing $0.39 per minute, $0.25 per text message sent and $0.20 per text message received. The new plan option go into effect on September 18.

Sprint's Drive First app keeps drivers safe behind the wheel

Sprint has announced a new app for smartphones that is designed to keep the phone out of the hands of drivers when they are behind the wheel. The Drive First app will automatically lock the phone when a vehicle is moving, preventing the use of the device.

According to a new report released by IDC, more smartphones than feature phones were shipped in Europe during the second quarter of this year. The firm notes that this is the first time that smartphones have had more shipments than feature phones in the European market.

Amazon expected to launch Netflix-like e-book rental service

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Amazon is in the process of launching a subscription e-book rental service, not unlike what Netflix offers for DVDs and streaming video content. According to "people familiar with the matter," Amazon is already in talks with book publishers for the service.

LightSquared signs wholesale network agreement with VoIP provider VoX Communications

LightSquared has announced yet another wholesale partnership for its forth-coming LTE network, this time with VoIP provider VoX Communications. VoX provides wholesale and retail voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) services for both businesses and consumers. The company intends to offer both voice and video services that will use LightSquared's not-yet-launched network, in addition to high-speed data and satellite services. This partnership is the fourteenth deal that LightSquared has inked. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

HTC contemplating smartphone operating system purchase

HTC has confirmed that it is considering the purchase of a mobile operating system that it can call its own, but the company is in no rush to run out and buy one. HTC is one of the largest smartphone manufacturers that doesn't have its own in-house smartphone operating system.
