Google snaps up 1,023 more patents from IBM

Thanks to a record in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, it has been revealed that Google purchased another 1,023 patents from IBM last month. These are in addition to the 1,030 patents that Google already purchased from Big Blue back in July.

Verizon adds more markets to tomorrow's LTE rollout

Verizon Wireless has added to the list of markets that will be getting 4G LTE service beginning tomorrow. The rollout now includes Fort Smith and Jonesboro, Ark.; Daytona, Fla.; Shreveport, La.; Kalamazoo and Saginaw, Mich.; Las Cruces, N.M.; Dyersburg, Tenn.; the Tri-Cities, Tenn./Va.; and Austin, Beaumont/Port Arthur, Wichita Falls, and El Paso, Texas. These new markets will be joined by San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, Calif.; Bloomington/Normal, Champaign/Urbana, Rockford, Springfield, and Quad Cities, Ill.; Iowa City, Iowa; Moorhead, Minn.; Reno, Nev.; Fargo, N.D.; and Canton, Lima, and Mansfield, Ohio. The total number of markets to gain LTE coverage tomorrow is 26, and Verizon will be offering LTE in 143 markets total.

U.S. Cellular releases Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for HTC Merge

U.S. Cellular has released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its HTC Merge smartphone. The update offers improved power management, a refined user interface, easier copy and paste, and more control over running apps. There is a new Flashlight app for the camera LED, and the Merge now supports 802.11n Wi-Fi connections for faster downloads. Users can download the update from U.S. Cellular's website and install it on their smartphones through a PC.

FCC wants LightSquared to test its network further

The Federal Communications Commission has responded to LightSquared's amended plan for its proposed 4G LTE network, and it wants the company to test its network further. The tests are being required by the FCC to make sure that the network does not interfere with GPS signals, despite the changes that LightSquared has proposed.

LG Optimus S Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade now available from Sprint

Sprint has announced that the long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade for the LG Optimus S smartphone is now being pushed out to users. The upgrade offers the usual set of enhancements that come with Gingerbread, including a refreshed user interface, a new multi-touch keyboard, dedicated power management and task killer apps, a Downloads app, and an updated camera app. The update also fixes a few bugs with volume control and 3-way calling. Sprint is releasing the update in stages, and all users are expected to get it within 10 days.

HTC Flyer tablet gets bootloader unlock tool

HTC has released the bootloader unlock tool for its 7-inch Flyer tablet. Previously available for the Sensation and EVO 3D smartphones, the bootloader unlock tool will allow users to install custom software on their Flyer tablets. A word of caution, though, as use of the tool will void any warranties. The bootloader unlock tool can be had for both the Wi-Fi-only and 3G versions of the Flyer, though it is not yet available for the EVO View 4G variant for Sprint. Enterprising users can download the tool from HTC's developer site now.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY headed to Japan this fall

Japanese carrier NTT DOCOMO has announced that it will carry the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY PlayStation-certified smartphone this fall. The version of the Android-powered PLAY for Japan is similar to the PLAY seen in other parts of the world, including its 4-inch display and slide-out gaming pad. NTT DOCOMO has customized some software on the phone to make inputting Japanese characters on-screen easier. The Xperia PLAY will hit DOCOMO shops in the middle of October.

LG Marquee for Sprint sports the brightest smartphone display available

Sprint and LG have just announced the new Marquee smartphone, a variation of the Optimus Black that was released for global markets earlier this year. Like the Black, the Marquee's claim to fame is its display, which LG says is the brightest found on any smartphone on the market.

T-Mobile's Galaxy S II to sport Qualcomm processor

A Samsung support account on Twitter has apparently confirmed that the upcoming version of the Galaxy S II smartphone for T-Mobile will not be powered by the same Samsung Exynos processor as other Galaxy S II smartphones, but will instead sport a dual-core Qualcomm processor.

Bell to turn on 4G LTE network in five cities today
