HTC DROID Incredible Gingerbread update rollout starts tomorrow

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the HTC DROID Incredible on Verizon Wireless will begin rolling out to users tomorrow. The update bumps the system OS to Android 2.3.4, and resolves a number of issues with MMS messages, among other things. The update will arrive for 10,000 users tomorrow, with 50,000 more receiving it on Wednesday. All users should receive the update by the end of this week.

FTC fines app developer $50,000 for privacy invasions

The Federal Trade Commission has levied a $50,000 fine against W3 Innovations, owner of Broken Thumbs Apps, for collecting personal information from minors. The FTC deemed that this practice was against the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, and the ruling has sparked lawmakers to clamor for stricter rules for protecting children online.

HTC releases bootloader unlock tool for European Sensation smartphones

Good news for owners of the HTC Sensation smartphone in Europe who also like to tinker with their personal electronics, as HTC has released the tool that will allow users to unlock the Sensations's bootloader. An unlocked bootloader allows users to load custom operating systems ROMs on their phones and customize them to their hearts content. Be warned, though, that HTC says unlocking the bootloader will void a device's warranty. Owners of the EVO 3D for Sprint and Sensation 4G on T-Mobile will have to continue to be patient, as HTC has not released the tool for those phones yet.

AT&T has announced that the successor to the original BlackBerry Torch 9800, the Torch 9810, will be available on August 21 for $49.99 with a new two-year agreement. The Torch 9810 sports an upgraded processor and touchscreen, and is running the latest OS from RIM: BlackBerry OS 7.

Sprint has announced pricing and availability of the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 BlackBerry 7 smartphones. Both smartphones will be available in Sprint stores and online starting August 21. The Bold 9930 will cost $249.99 with a new two-year agreement, while the Torch 9850 will command $149.99 with a new contract. Both phones are powered by a 1.2GHz processor and run BlackBerry OS 7. The Bold 9930 features a 2.8-inch touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard, while the Torch 9850 sports a 3.7-inch touchscreen display and lacks a hardware keyboard.

BlackBerry Bold 9930 now available from Verizon for $250

With nary a peep from RIM or Verizon Wireless, the BlackBerry Bold 9930 has shown up on Big Red's website and is now available to purchase. The Bold 9930 is the latest flagship smartphone to come from Waterloo, and it replaces the aging Bold 9650. It is powered by a 1.2GHz processor, features a 640 x 480 pixel touchscreen above its full QWERTY keyboard, and is said to be the thinnest BlackBerry smartphone produced to date at only 10.4mm (0.41in). The Bold 9930 runs the latest BlackBerry OS 7, which is touted to offer web browsing capabilities that are 40 percent faster than with OS 6. Interested buyers can pick up the Bold 9930 from Verizon now for a steep $249.99 with a new two-year agreement.
