Foursquare for Android updated with new interface, cleaner look Posted: 11 Aug 2011 03:54 PM PDT Foursquare has issued an update for its Android app that brings a new look and a cleaner layout. It is now easier to check in, as the check in button is permanently located in the upper right corner, and the navigation tabs have been spaced out a bit further. The app also groups nearby Specials under the Explore tab, so they are bit easier to find than they used to be. Foursquare for Android is free and available in the Android Market now. T-Mobile begins rollout of G-Slate Android 3.1 Honeycomb update Posted: 11 Aug 2011 03:28 PM PDT The T-Mobile G-Slate is catching up with the Joneses, that is if the Joneses are the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or Motorola XOOM, as it is now being updated to Android 3.1 Honeycomb. The update adds Google Videos support, resizable widgets, USB accessory support, and an expanded recent apps list. T-Mobile is rolling out the update in a staggered fashion, and users should get a notification when it is ready to be downloaded and installed. T-Mobile makes a point to say that it cannot expedite the rollout of the update, so if you don't get it right away, you will just have to be patient and wait it out. Read the full story here. |

Motorola hints at flexing patent strength, seeking royalties from Android manufacturers Posted: 11 Aug 2011 01:38 PM PDT Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha made it clear this week that the company, which has an extensive patent portfolio relating to mobile devices, intends to collect royalties on its patents from other Android manufacturers at some point in the future. This is similar to what some Android manufacturers have been facing from Microsoft, which has pressured a number of companies into licensing deals for its software patents. LightSquared points out GPS industry's lack of compliance in FCC letter Posted: 11 Aug 2011 01:02 PM PDT In its ongoing efforts to gain approval for its proposed 4G LTE network, LightSquared has penned a letter to the Federal Communications Commission pointing out that the GPS industry does not comply with the Department of Defense's standards for filtering transmissions, and this is the root cause of the interference issues seen with LightSquared's network. No Dutch injunction against Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - for now Posted: 11 Aug 2011 10:43 AM PDT Samsung has managed to escape an injunction in the Netherlands that would block sales of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, for now at least. An injunction was issued by a court in Germany that applied to all of the EU, but thanks to the Netherlands' different court system, Samsung is free to sell its wares there. Nokia keeps smartphone lead thanks to existing inventory sales: Gartner Posted: 11 Aug 2011 09:33 AM PDT While many other analyst firms are proclaiming victory over Nokia for Apple, and a quick look at the number of smartphones that each company claimed to ship last quarter would lead you to believe that is the case, research firm Gartner says that Nokia is still the number one seller of smartphones in the world, thanks to an aggressive push in moving old inventory stock out of stores. HTC's investment in Beats Audio totals $300 million Posted: 11 Aug 2011 09:10 AM PDT During question and answer session of the conference call to re-announce the announcement that HTC and Beats Audio have formed a partnership, HTC CEO Peter Chou confirmed reports that the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has made a $300 million investment in Beats Audio. This investment buys HTC a 51 percent stake in the company, though Beats will remain autonomous and will continue to support its licensing deals with HP and other companies. AT&T offers mobile security options from Juniper Networks Posted: 11 Aug 2011 08:02 AM PDT AT&T has announced a new partnership with Juniper Networks to provide mobile security services to both consumers and businesses. The AT&T Mobile Security application is due to arrive alter this year and will provide mobile devices with "anti-virus, anti-malware, and application monitoring, and control." Business customers will also benefit from easier compliance with government regulations, and will have the ability to enforce security policies and manage both personal and company-owned devices. Feature phone owners buy apps too; revenues expected to hit $1 billion in 5 years Posted: 11 Aug 2011 07:31 AM PDT According to analyst firm Ovum, the feature phone app market is expected to bring in $1 billion in revenue by 2016, double what it does now.
