Sprint abandons plans to carry 4G BlackBerry PlayBook Posted: 12 Aug 2011 11:59 AM PDT Bad news for those who were hoping to fly along on Sprint's 4G WiMAX network with a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, as the carrier has scrapped its plans to carry a 4G version of the 7-inch tablet. Back in January, Sprint said it would bring a 4G version of the PlayBook to its network by summer, but now the carrier says the tablet market is just too crowded to offer yet another option. Teen arrested for using BlackBerry Messenger to incite riots in UK Posted: 12 Aug 2011 09:31 AM PDT A UK teen girl has been arrested for using RIM's BlackBerry Messenger to incite riots in Essex. The 18-year-old has been charged with intentionally encouraging or assisting in the committal of an offense under the Serious Crime Act 2007. The UK government has warned in the past that it would shut down or control social networks during times of national unrest, and this may be the first time that it has acted upon those threats. Amazon CEO patents airbags for phones Posted: 12 Aug 2011 08:46 AM PDT Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and accomplice Greg Heart, who is a vice president at the e-tailer, have filed a patent for airbags and retro jets for phones, with the idea being that the phone would be protected in a fall. August 29 Samsung event could bring U.S. Galaxy S II launch Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:14 AM PDT We just got dropped an invite to a press event being held by Samsung on August 29 in NYC. The invite said that is for a major product announcement, and there is a glowing "II" image on it. Our wheels have been turning, and we have a feeling we might finally be seeing the American debut of the vaunted Galaxy S II smartphone. Samsung did say that it would be coming to the U.S. in August, and August 29 would be beating that cutoff by a mere two days. Acer's 7-inch Iconia Tab A100 finally arrives this weekend Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:37 AM PDT It was seemingly forever ago when Acer announced its 7-inch tablet, the Iconia Tab A100, back in February. Since then, it has been revealed that it will launch with Android 3.2 Gingerbread, which has been adapted to work on 7-inch displays. Samsung to appeal European Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction on August 25 Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:22 AM PDT Samsung may have had a set back for its Galaxy Tab 10.1 plans when a German court issued a preliminary injunction blocking it from sale in the EU while the trial from Apple is worked out in the courts, but it is certainly not going down without a fight. The Korean manufacturer will be headed to court on August 25 to appeal the injunction, and reclaim the right to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in the EU. Or so it hopes, at least. Rugged Samsung Galaxy Xcover to hit UK later this year Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:07 AM PDT Samsung has let it be known that its recently-announced, ruggedized Galaxy smartphone, the Galaxy Xcover, will be hitting UK shelves later this year. Unfortunately, an exact date and price were not provided. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread Galaxy Xcover is built to withstand general abuse, including submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. TIA throws weight behind AT&T buyout of T-Mobile Posted: 12 Aug 2011 05:36 AM PDT The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), a group that represents manufacturers and supply companies in the telecommunications industry, has given its support to the buyout of T-Mobile by AT&T.
