Sony Ericsson pushes out updates for Xperia arc, PLAY in Europe Posted: 02 Aug 2011 05:03 AM PDT Sony Ericsson has posted new software updates for the Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY smartphones in Europe. The updates do not move the Android version beyond 2.3.3 Gingerbread, but do offer some new features and Sony Ericsson apps. Included in the updates are the xLoud feature that boosts the volume of music played through the speaker, stereo recording in the video app, DLNA compatibility with Digital Home, and new themes and landscape mode for the homescreen. Users can go to the System Updates section of the Settings app to check for an update, or they can use Sony Ericsson's PC Companion program to load it from a personal computer. U.S. Department of Justice digs into Nortel patent sale Posted: 01 Aug 2011 12:00 PM PDT The U.S. Department of Justice has begun an investigation into the purchase of 6,000 of Nortel's patents by a consortium of companies led by Apple. Video: Motorola Titanium (Sprint/Nextel) iDEN smartphone video tour Posted: 01 Aug 2011 11:33 AM PDT The Motorola Titanium is the latest Android smartphone available for Sprint's iDEN-powered Nextel network. It has a 3.1-inch display and a portrait QWERTY keyboard, and sports a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, but no HD video. Kyocera Echo dual-screen smartphone to get Gingerbread update today Posted: 01 Aug 2011 08:29 AM PDT Sprint is pushing out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its dual-screened Kyocera Echo smartphone today. The update brings the usual goodies that come along with Gingerbread, including a download manager app and improved performance, as well as the latest version of the Swype 3.0 keyboard with Tap Correction and Horizontal Word Choice list. Additionally, the Echo is getting a new app called Eco Mode that aids users in managing the battery use on their devices. Users should get a notification when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed on their phones, or they can go to the System Updates section of the Settings app to force a check for the new software. Apple suit prompts Amazon to stop accepting app submissions in Germany Posted: 01 Aug 2011 08:01 AM PDT Amazon has announced that it will no longer take app submissions for its Amazon Appstore for Android in Germany due to the ongoing lawsuit from Apple over Amazon's use of the Appstore name. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 kept from Australians by Apple injunction Posted: 01 Aug 2011 06:06 AM PDT Apple has taken its patent infringement and trade dress case against Samsung to the land down under, as it has now filed an injunction against Samsung with Australian courts.
