Apple, book publishers sued for price-fixing of e-books

A class action lawsuit has been filed in the state of California alleging that Apple and a number of book publishers, including HarperCollins Publishers, Hachette Book Group, Macmillan Publishers, Penguin Group Inc., and Simon & Schuster banded together on e-book prices to force Amazon and the rest of the industry to raise prices on e-books.

New Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader skirts by Apple's rules

There was a bit of a kerfuffle among book sellers the other week when Apple decided to start enforcing its new in-app purchase rules that would force the book sellers to share 30 percent of any revenue generated within their iOS apps with Apple. Popular e-book readers like Kobo and Barnes & Noble's NOOK app removed the ability to purchase books or subscriptions from the app in order to comply with Apple's new rules without giving the Cupertino company any of their revenues. Amazon's Kindle app was adjusted in a similar fashion, but Amazon had also been working on another solution behind the scenes that has now gone live with nary an announcement from the online retailer.

Video: Facebook Messenger app for Android video tour

Facebook has released a new stand-alone messaging app for the iPhone and Android smartphones that marries its Facebook Messaging service with the group messaging app Beluga that the social network purchased earlier this year. Called Messenger, the new app allows you to quickly and easily access your Facebook messages and chats, and start new single or group chats with both your Facebook friends and those in your phone's contact list. Facebook launches Messenger app for iPhone, Android smartphones

Facebook has taken its acquisition of group messaging service Beluga and parlayed it into a standalone messaging app for the iPhone and Android smartphones called Messenger. Messenger takes the best features of Beluga and integrates them into Facebook's existing messaging system, while providing one-stop access for all of your Facebook messages in one location.

Nokia pulls Symbian, low-end phones from U.S.; few notice, care

Nokia has made it known that it will be pulling all of its Symbian-powered phones and low-end models from the U.S. market as it puts all of its efforts behind Windows Phone. This follows the news from earlier today that the Nokia N9 MeeGo smartphone would not be making it to American shores.

ZTE moves 35 million handsets in first half of 2011

Chinese phone manufacturer ZTE has made the announcement that it shipped 35 million phones in the first six months of 2011. This is an increase of 30 percent over the same period last year, and was bolstered by a 400 percent increase in smartphone shipments.

MetroPCS to pick up Samsung Admire smartphone

The Samsung Admire smartphone that was recently announced for Cellular South has also been picked up by MetroPCS. As a reminder, the Admire sports a 3.5-inch, HVGA (320 x 480 pixel) display and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. MetroPCS did not reveal an exact release date or price in its announcement, but it does promise that the Admire will arrive in time for back to school shopping.

German court bars Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from Europe in Apple battle

Apple has been granted a preliminary injunction by a German court that bars Samsung from distributing the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in all of the European Union - except the Netherlands. The ruling agrees with Apple's claims that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 mimics the iPad to a point that it infringes on Apple's design patents and trade dress.

FCC will review AT&T's bids for T-Mobile, Qualcomm spectrum jointly

The Federal Communications Commission has informed AT&T, T-Mobile USA, and Qualcomm that it will review AT&T's bids to purchase T-Mobile and Qualcomm's spectrum jointly, since there is a fair amount of overlap in the issues presented.

Optimum app for iPhone, iPod updated with live TV streaming

Subscribers to Cablevision's Optimum TV service have been able to watch live TV on the iPad with the Optimum app for some time now, provided they were at home and connected to their Cablevision internet service. Unfortunately, the live TV capability wasn't extended to the iPhone or iPod touch versions of the Optimum app, but an update released today has brought the smaller iOS devices up to speed with the iPad.

VIZIO's 8-inch tablet now shipping for $300

VIZIO has announced that its 8-inch entry to the Android tablet fray is now shipping nationwide for $300. Retailers such as Sam's Club, Walmart, and Amazon are now receiving shipments of the tablet for lucky back to school shoppers. As a reminder, the 8-inch VIZIO tablet features a 1024 x 768 pixel display, a 1GHz processor, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with VIZIO's custom user interface. It also sports a front-facing camera and 2GB of built-in storage.

Tablet makers have better shot to compete with iPad in Europe says analysts

According to IT research firm Forrester, tablet makers stand a better chance at competing with Apple's market-dominating iPad in Europe than they do in the U.S. Forrester points to the fact that Apple has a much smaller retail presence in Europe than in the States, though competing tablet makers will have to undercut Apple's prices to make an impact.

ITC agrees to investigate more of Apple's complaints against HTC

The International Trade Commission has agreed to investigate five more Apple patent infringement complaints against HTC. The agency had already issued a preliminary ruling with Apple as the victor for two patent complaints back in June.
