PayPal expects mobile payments to reach $3 billion this year

PayPal has upped its projection for total mobile payments it will have processed this year to $3 billion. The eBay-owned company had predicted $1.5 billion last year, and then upped it to $2 billion earlier this year. The $3 billion covers two types of mobile transactions: those from people sending money to one another with the mobile app, and those from which people buy things online via their mobile phone and charge it to a PayPal account. PayPal attributes the growth to the greater adoption of smartphones and more exposure for PayPal.

Motorola BRAVO for AT&T gains side-loading via Market app

Motorola's BRAVO smartphone has been one of the many on AT&T that lacked the ability to install applications outside of the Android Market (known as side-loading). Some AT&T phones have received firmware updates to enable the feature, but Motorola has taken a slightly different approach with the BRAVO. Owners can now download an app from the Android Market that enables the feature with one press. The Sideload Enabler for BRAVO will allow users to take advantage of third-party app stores like the Amazon Appstore for Android and the GetJar app store. If you own a BRAVO, go download the app and then check out Cut the Rope for Android once you have the magic ability to side-load apps.

Intel joins in on Nortel patent auction; OK'd by the feds

Intel has become the latest company to get approval from the federal government to bid on Nortel's suite of wireless technology patents that go up for auction next week. Yesterday, it was reported that Apple had gained approval, while Google has had a bid in on the patents for some time now. The suite of patents cover technologies like 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, and are very attractive to any company in, or looking to get into, the wireless market (as is the case with Intel). The auction will begin on Monday.

Sprint adding bloatware removal ability to its Android devices

News that the HTC EVO 3D had the ability to remove pre-installed apps hit the wires yesterday to much fanfare and appreciation from users and press alike. We reached out to Sprint to get more clarification on the topic and found out that it was in fact intentional, and that we could be seeing more of this in the future.

HTC EVO 3D available today from Sprint, no Premiere membership required

The HTC EVO 3D, HTC's first foray into 3D-capable smartphones and the first one to hit the U.S. market, is available for purchase today from Sprint. Sprint Premiere members got early access to the dual-core smartphone a couple of days ago, but now the general public can buy the EVO 3D as well. The EVO 3D costs $199.99 with a new two-year agreement.

Three UK picks up recently announced Sony Ericsson Xperia ray

Three UK has become the first carrier to announce that it will carry the new Sony Ericsson Xperia ray when it hits the market this summer. The Xperia ray is the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone to come out of Sony Ericsson's labs, and features a 3.3-inch display, a 1GHz processor, and an aluminum frame. Three did not release pricing information or an exact availability date yet.

HTC EVO View 4G tablet now available from Sprint

Sprint's WiMAX-equipped version of the HTC Flyer we reviewed recently, the EVO View 4G, is now available for purchase from the carrier's website and in Sprint retail locations. The EVO View 4G runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and has HTC's custom Sense interface on top. It is powered by a single-core, 1.5GHz processor, and has a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. The EVO View 4G costs $399.99 with a two-year data plan agreement, or $649.99 without a contract.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 makes UK debut on August 4

Samsung's most recent answer to the Apple iPad, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, has been available in the U.S. since June 17, but our comrades across the pond have had no access to the tablet. That looks to be changing on August 4, as Samsung has announced that both Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet will be available in a number of British shops. Unfortunately, no pricing information was revealed at this time. The Galaxy Tab 8.9, the little brother to the 10.1, was tipped as coming to the UK at some point, as well, though no date was provided for that.
