Firefox for Android hits version 5, adds Do Not Track feature Posted: 22 Jun 2011 01:34 PM PDT Mozilla's mobile version of its Firefox browser for the Android platform has been upgraded to version 5 with a bunch of bug fixes and a couple of new features. The highlight feature added is the Do Not Track function, which is aimed at providing more control to the user over their data and browsing habits as they surf the web. Of course, in order for it to work properly, the websites visited need to recognize and honor the setting, so it likely won't have too much of an effect for the average user. Other tweaks include better panning, faster page loading (especially over 3G networks), and better support for the SwiftKey keyboard. Verizon 4G LTE takes a Hawaiian vacation on July 21 Posted: 22 Jun 2011 01:03 PM PDT In addition to the group of other markets that are due to get LTE service on July 21, Verizon Wireless has made it known that Hawaii will get the high-speed goods on that date as well. The carrier will be covering Maui, Honolulu, Hilo, and surrounding areas with the new service. Cricket to start off 4G LTE network tests in Tucson this year Posted: 22 Jun 2011 11:51 AM PDT Cricket has informed PC Mag that it intends to start trials of its upcoming 4G LTE network in Tucson, Arizona later this year. It will test the network with USB modems at first, as it does not intend to launch 4G LTE handsets until they come down in price. Cricket has also inked a deal with LightSquared for LTE roaming services on LightSquared's upcoming network. Pricing for plans and packages has yet to be announced. Alien Dalvik enables Nokia N9 MeeGo smartphone to run Android apps Posted: 22 Jun 2011 11:17 AM PDT Nokia's just announced MeeGo-powered smartphone, the N9, may have quite a few app options available to it through the Qt framework, but it doesn't have to stop there. The developers behind the Alien Dalvik system, Myriad, have confirmed that Android apps will be able to run on the N9 thanks to Alien Dalvik. Alien Dalvik is a virtual runtime environment that allows Android apps to run on platforms other than Android. This ability will allow the N9 access to a much greater number of applications. Samsung denies talking with Apple to settle patent dispute Posted: 22 Jun 2011 10:45 AM PDT Samsung has denied the statements made by an attorney for Apple that the two companies are in private talks to settle their patent dispute out of court. "We are unaware of any meetings or discussions between the two sides over this matter," said Samsung in a statement. Accesory maker Zagg buys accessory maker iFrogz Posted: 22 Jun 2011 10:14 AM PDT Zagg, the company behind the popular Invisible Shield screen and phone protectors, has announced that it will buy iFrogz, another popular accessory maker, for $105 million in stocks and cash. iFrogz will remain independent within Zagg, and it will continue focus on the cases and headphones targeted towards iPhone owners that it has been producing. Judge squashes Samsung's request to see Apple iPad 3, iPhone 5 Posted: 22 Jun 2011 06:59 AM PDT The judge presiding over the Apple and Samsung lawsuit has denied Samsung's request to see unreleased Apple products, specifically the iPad 3 and iPhone 5, neither of which have been announced. Motorola XOOM now getting Android 3.1 update worldwide Posted: 22 Jun 2011 05:21 AM PDT Owners of the Motorola XOOM tablet outside of the U.S. have something to be happy about today, as the company has announced that the roll-out of the Android 3.1 Honeycomb upgrade has begun.
