Google Voice lets users keep old number after porting Posted: 09 Jun 2011 01:31 PM PDT Today Google announced that Google Voice users that port a number over from a carrier can opt to keep their old Google Voice number forwarding to the newly ported number beyond the 90 days typically offered. For a price. If you wish to keep your original Google Voice number after porting, you will have to pay a one-time fee of $20. To do so, you will need to go to your account's Settings tab and click on "make permanent" to initiate the process. Any calls or text messages sent to the old number will then forward, though calls or messages initiated from the account will show as coming from the newly ported number. Read the full story here. |

The PHOTON 4G is the first global 4G phone from Sprint, and is the first one on the network to have an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor. Video: Motorola TRIUMPH (Virgin Mobile) live hands-on first look Posted: 09 Jun 2011 11:41 AM PDT We got a chance to get some hands-on time with the newly announced Motorola TRIUMPH for Virgin Mobile. The TRIUMPH features a 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) display and a 1GHz processor. It run Android 2.2 Froyo without any skin or customization, and it features both a 5 megapixel rear camera and a VGA front camera. It also sports an HDMI-out port for displaying content on an HDTV. The SHOUTcast support has been improved with access to more stations, while the streaming engine itself has been overhauled for better performance. Users can now stream full length CDs through AOL's Full CD Listening Party with Winamp. Right now there are 25 albums covering a variety of genres available to stream for free. IDC predicts 55 percent growth for smartphones in 2011 Posted: 09 Jun 2011 08:28 AM PDT IDC released a report today predicting that the smartphone market will grow by 55 percent this year, a rate four times greater than the phone market as a whole. The company also said that it expects Google's Android operating system to grow to a 40 percent market share during the second half of 2011 and predicted that Nokia's upcoming Windows Phone smartphones could capture up to 20 percent of the market in 2015 - if the integration with Microsoft goes smoothly. RIM launches News 1.0 RSS reader for BlackBerry PlayBook Posted: 09 Jun 2011 07:50 AM PDT Today Research In Motion announced the release of its News 1.0 application for the company's BlackBerry PlayBook tablet computer. The company says that this RSS compatible news reader will keep all of a user's news sources organized, and even offers keyword searching facilities. The BlackBerry News app has been available for RIM's smartphones since last year, and the new tablet version will synchronize with existing smartphone installs by linking on the user's existing BlackBerry ID. Windows XP users, no Apple iCloud for you Posted: 09 Jun 2011 07:14 AM PDT While it went largely unnoticed in the official press release, Apple states that its new iCloud service will require Microsoft PC users to be running Windows Vista or Windows 7. That means that untold millions of Windows XP users will not be able to take advantage of Apple's new iCloud service for data and media synchronization. iCloud can be used to store and synchronize mail, photos, music, contacts, calendar appointments and other data with Apple's servers where they can be reached by any compatible iOS device or personal computer (that isn't running Windows XP). Android Market offering device compatibility information for apps Posted: 09 Jun 2011 07:02 AM PDT Google has quietly added device compatibility checks to the Android Market. This means that developers can specify phone models that their app is guaranteed to work on, and users will be able to see this information when they view the app in the Market. Previously, developers would have to use the app description field to say what devices are compatible with their app. This new feature should make it easier for developers from a support perspective, and should allow for fewer unhappy customers. T-Mobile drops price of G-Slate to $399 on-contract Posted: 09 Jun 2011 06:10 AM PDT T-Mobile has made the price of entry to get a 3D-capable, Android tablet a bit easier to manage, as it has dropped the price of its G-Slate tablet to $399.99 with a two-year agreement, down from the $529.99 that it was launched at. The off-contract price has also been lowered from $749.99 to $599.99. The price was one of the few things we had issue with when we reviewed the G-Slate back in April, so it is nice to see that T-Mobile has addressed it and made the price more competitive.
