Apple expands patent fight with Samsung to South Korea Posted: 24 Jun 2011 05:20 AM PDT Apple has expanded its patent lawsuit against Samsung with a new filing in South Korea, Samsung's home country. Samsung had already filed a lawsuit against Apple in South Korea, after Apple fired off its complaints that Samsung infringed upon Apple's design and trade dress in other countries. HP Palm Pre 2 for Verizon gets webOS 2.1 update Posted: 24 Jun 2011 04:50 AM PDT Reports are in that the HP Palm Pre 2 for Verizon Wireless, the last of the original Palm designed smartphones, has finally received the update from webOS 2.0 to webOS 2.1. With webOS 2.1 come a number of improvements and new features, like Exhibition mode with the TouchStone wireless charger, Voice Dial, Bluetooth keyboard support, and a number of bug fixes in the email, messaging, photos, and tasks applications. The update is being rolled out to users gradually, so they should get a notification on their Pre 2 smartphones when it is ready to download. Apple has permission to bid against Google for Nortel patents Posted: 23 Jun 2011 12:57 PM PDT Bloomberg is reporting that the U.S. government has given Apple permission to bid on the suite of patents that Nortel has up for sale. The patents cover a multitude of wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi and LTE. Google has already received permission to bid on the suite, which goes on sale next week. It is possible that RIM is interested in the patents as well, though with the recent stock woes that the company has faced, it may no longer want to expend the capital. Read the full story here. |

This is nothing new in the smartphone world, but it certainly has become more prevalent in recent years. Motorola ATRIX 4G could get unlocked bootloader with Gingerbread update Posted: 23 Jun 2011 10:42 AM PDT This could be the news that many Motorola ATRIX 4G owners have been looking for, as it is reported that the dual-core smartphone will get an unlocked bootloader when it receives its update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. An unlocked bootloader would allow enterprising hackers to finally be able to load custom software and OSes on the ATRIX 4G. Apparently, Chinese versions of the ATRIX have already received the update with the unlocked bootloader. Motorola has promised that it will unlock bootloaders of some phones with software updates, so this might be the first fruits of that endeavor. Read the full story here. |
