TomTom working on Android app, no release date given

The maker of one of the most popular third-party navigation apps available for the iPhone, TomTom, has confirmed that it is working on a version for Google's Android platform. TomTom has been behind other navigation apps for Android in the past, but it has never released one with its own branding. TomTom faces more competition on Android than it does on iOS, thanks to Google's free Maps with Navigation that is installed on most Android smartphones. Unfortunately, the company did not give a time frame as to when the Android app would be available. TomTom said it does not plan to make an app for the Windows Phone platform.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer getting Android 3.1 update in UK now

Asus UK is now rolling out the Android Honeycomb 3.1 update to its Eee Pad Transformer users. The latest OS update that is already available to Motorola XOOM tablets in the U.S. has now been extended to Transformer owners. The update offers XBox 360 and Sony PlayStation controller support as well as support for external peripherals such as keyboards and mice. Other added features include user interface modifications, resizable widgets, Recent Apps list expansion, PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) support, and stability improvements and bug fixes. Asus Eee Pad Transformer users should see the update hit their tablets over-the-air starting now.

Fox News app for Apple's iPad now available

The app offers users a Happening Now section, which provides the day's top new stories, Fox News Ticker, which sends breaking news direct to the user's desktop, and the ability to share news content to social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as email. AT&T spends almost $7 million lobbying for T-Mobile buyout in Q1

In its efforts to convince regulators and the general public that the proposed buyout of T-Mobile is a good thing, AT&T has spent nearly $7 million on lobbying in the first quarter alone. At this pace, the carrier is well on track to spend more than the $15 million it dished out in lobbying efforts last year. Despite the high spending, AT&T claims that it is not seeing any more opposition to the merger than it had expected, and is confident that it will be approved. In comparison, Sprint, the loudest opponent of the deal, has spent about $583,000 in lobbying efforts against the merger.

Barnes & Noble shipping new NOOK now

Barnes & Noble has started shipping its newly announced NOOK e-reader. The new version of the NOOK features a 6-inch E Ink Pearl touchscreen and uses Android 2.1 Eclair as its operating system, though users will only see Barnes & Noble's custom interface on top of that. Customer's can order the new NOOK in time for Father's Day instore or online for $139. Stores will have live demo models tomorrow, with product in stock to sell for this weekend.

Sprint spices up HTC EVO 3D with movie bundles

Sprint has announced that it will be bundling The Green Hornet 3D with the HTC EVO 3D, when it is released, to showcase the 3D capabilities of the EVO's 3D screen. Sprint says that the movie will be pre-loaded on the phone's microSD card. Customers will be able to download more 3D movies through the HTC Watch app and the Blockbuster app, both of which will be pre-installed on the EVO 3D. In addition, the Gameloft storefront will be loaded on the EVO 3D, allowing users to download 3D games to the phone.

326 million 3G/4G LTE devices activated by 2016 estimates report

According to a new report from research firm Maravedis, there will be an estimated 326 million dual-mode 3G/4G LTE devices activated by 2016. Though many LTE devices released thus far have been single-mode devices like USB modems, as more smartphones with LTE capabilities hit the market they will need to be able to connect to legacy 3G networks as well. The report says that by 2013, 75 percent of the LTE devices on the market will support the legacy networks.

Verizon says that this value bundle can save customers more than $10 per month compared to buying the services separately. Verizon Wireless has announced that it will be expanding its line of Brew and Brew MP equipped feature phones. Brew MP phones bridge the gap between basic feature phones and smartphones by offering downloadable apps to consumers. Verizon says that the new phones will have a completely redesigned app store, with new graphics, live previews of apps, and a recommendation engine. In-app purchases and direct carrier billing are also featured in the Brew MP store. The carrier did not reveal any details as to when we will see the new handsets on the market.

Nokia's shares at lowest point in 13 years after profit warning

Unsurprisingly, investors have dumped shares of Nokia after yesterday's announcement that profits in Q2 2011 would be much lower than previously expected. As a result, the company's stock is now trading at the lowest it has been in 13 years. Analysts have told investors to avoid Nokia's stock, as it is likely to continue to fall as the year goes on. Nokia cited challenges in China and Europe, as well as stiff competition from Android as the reasons for the decline in profits. The company plans to release a new Windows Phone smartphone by the end of this year, but analysts are not confident that a Windows Phone device will save Nokia in the short term. They claim that it would be a high-end device that will be sold in low volumes, not what Nokia needs to turn its ship around.
