AT&T buys out partner Convergys from Cincinnati SMSA

Reuters is reporting that AT&T has announced that it is buying out partner Convergys from the two Cincinnati-based wireless companies. AT&T is buying out the 34 percent Convergys stake in Cincinnati SMSA as well as its 45 percent stake in Cincinnati SMSA Tower Holdings. Convergys said that the deal does not require regulatory approval because AT&T already had a controlling interest in both companies.

Verizon offering VideoSurf video recognition tool to its Android smartphone users

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it is now offering VideoSurf's mobile app to Verizon smartphone users. The VideoSurf application lets user point their phone's camera at video sources like televisions, movies, and music videos to quickly get identification and search infromation on the video source in question.

AT&T "working on" shared data plans

Speaking to AllThingsD's Walt Mossberg, AT&T Wireless CEO Ralph de la Vega said at the D9 event that his company was working on a shared data plan. Based on the discussion, which was about users having multiple devices that currently each require their own contracts, such a shared data plan would allot a monthly data bucket to a user, rather than to a particular device owned by the user. No timeframe was given as to when consumers would be offered such a data option.

Video: HTC Trophy (Verizon) unboxing and video tour - part 1 of 2

The HTC Trophy is the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone to be carried by Verizon Wireless in the U.S. Hardware-wise, it is nearly the same as the GSM HTC Trophy that was released to European markets late last year. The Verizon version has both a CDMA and GSM radio in it, making it a global-capable device.

A sample 720p HD video recorded with the HTC Trophy, the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone for Verizon Wireless. As per the standard Windows Phone 7 hardware requirements from Microsoft, it is equipped with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with a flash, and can record video in 720 HD (1280 x 720 pixel) resolution.

Sony Ericsson announces new games for Xperia PLAY Android PlayStation smartphone

Today Sony Ericsson announced that it is adding over 20 new games to the list of titles available to its Xperia PLAY Android smartphone. 10 of those titles will be exclusives, including Minecraft.

HTC's CEO predicting smartphones to outsell feature phones by end of year

During his keynote speech at Qualcomm's Uplinq conference in San Diego today, HTC CEO Peter Chou predicted that smartphones will outsell feature phones by the end of 2011. This is not to say that he believes there will have been more smartphones than feature phones sold in the whole of 2011, but merely that by the end of the year more smartphones will be sold on a day to day basis than feature phones, setting the stage for smartphone dominance in 2012 and beyond.

Twitter adds image uploading, sharing

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo announced that his company is offering its own image uploading and sharing service, which will remove the need for long-time Twitterverse players TwitPic, Yfrog, and Twitgoo. The image service will be integrated directly into the company's website, as well as its smartphone and tablet applications. Twitter will be teaming with Photobucket for the endeavor.

Sprint making HTC EVO 4G Android Gingerbread update available on Friday

Sprint has just confirmed that its HTC EVO 4G smartphone users will begin receiving notifications for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system update starting on Monday, June 6. The notifications will roll out in waves, according to the company. In a blazing burst of insight, though, Sprint will also be making the update available right away to those that just can't wait. The manual update option will become available starting on this Friday, June 3. It will be accessible from the phone's Settings, System Updates, HTC Software Update section. The update will restore the EVO's ability to support multiple Gmail accounts and will fix some battery issues, as well.

Today at COMPUTEX in Taiwan, Texas Instruments unveiled its new OMAP4470 processor, the latest in the company's OMAP4 lineup of mobile device CPUs. Android 2.3 Gingerbread thought to hit Sprint's HTC EVO 4G on June 3

According to a purportedly leaked document, HTC's EVO 4G smartphone for Sprint is expected to receive a big Android update, to 2.3 Gingerbread. The update is thought to be made available as a manually applied upgrade on June 3 to EVO 4G users and is expected to offer a few fixes as well. No official word has come from Sprint or HTC, so it appears that we will just have to wait and see what happens on the June 3.

Today Samsung announced that its Android 3.1 Honeycomb powered tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, would be available in limited quantity from Best Buy's Union Square location in New York starting on June 8 and would be generally available nationwide on June 17.
