Google blocks rooted Android devices from its movie rental service Posted: 22 May 2011 09:09 AM PDT Here is some unfortunate news if you happen to have rooted your Android phone or tablet for whatever reason: Google has blocked its new Android Market movie rentals service from working with rooted devices. User who try to download a movie through the Android Market to a rooted phone or tablet will see an error that states the app has failed to fetch the license and the movie will not play. Google claims that this is due to copyright protection and rooted devices are "currently unsupported" by the service. Read the full story here. |
Best Buy shopkick location based coupon smartphone app goes national Posted: 22 May 2011 08:08 AM PDT Best Buy has officially rolled out its "shopkick" smartphone application nationally to all of its 1300 Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores. The company had been trialling the app in 257 of its U.S. stores since last August. The app detects a "shopkick signal" when a customer walks in the door using an inaudible sound emitted from each Best Buy location and then alerts the smartphone of "kickbucks" that can be earned over time and redeemed for Best Buy gift certificates. The application is available for both iPhones and Android smartphones and can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and the Android Market now. Read the full story here. |
Firefox Beta for Android updated with Do Not Track privacy feature Posted: 22 May 2011 07:51 AM PDT Mozilla has updated its Firefox Beta for Android browser with the new Do Not Track privacy feature that debuted on the desktop version of the browser earlier this year. When this feature is enabled, the Firefox browser will tell the websites that you visit that you do not want your online behavior tracked for the purposes of targeted advertising. This is the first time that this kind of feature has been available on a mobile device. While this is a nice feature, and many will surely appreciate it, it hinges on the websites respecting the request from the browser and not tracking the user, something they cannot be forced to do. Well, if you are looking to pre-order the upcoming HTC EVO 3D Android uberphone, it looks like you can now do so through Sprint, according to Engadget. Still no news on a release date or how much the phone will actually cost when it arrives, but like the other retailers, plunking down $50 will secure a spot in line for you.
