Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, arc to get Android 2.3.3 and Facebook integration

Starting next week, Sony Ericsson's new Android smartphones, the Xperia PLAY and arc, are to receive an update that brings the handsets up to version 2.3.3 of the Android operating system. Also included in the update will be the recently announced Facebook integration for Xperia handsets. The new feature will offer users a more social experience with the phone's picture gallery, music player, phone book, and calendar.

Video: Google Music demo on Android Honeycomb and Gingerbread

Here is a demonstration of Google's new Google Music cloud-based music service, which is currently available in beta form and accessible by invitation only. It allows users to upload their music to a Google server, where it can then be accessed by a compatible Android smartphone, tablet or Flash-capable web browser.

HTC HD7S WP7 smartphone coming to AT&T June 5

We knew it was coming, and now we know when and for how much. AT&T has just announced that the HTC HD7S Windows Phone 7 smartphone will be available on June 5 for $199.99 on a new two-year agreement. The HD7S is very similar to the HD7 that was release for T-Mobile last summer, and features a 4.3-inch, WVGA touchscreen. The difference is the screen is now a Super LCD model, as opposed to the standard LCD of the previous version. The HD7S also has a 1GHz processor and 16GB of internal storage.

Angry Birds for Windows Phone 7 delayed until end of June

Thanks to Microsoft's plans for its Must Have Games promotion, we now know that Angry Birds will not arrive for the Windows Phone 7 platform until the end of June, a bit later than initially expected. Either way, WP7 users will be able to get their bird-flinging fix eventually. The delay doesn't appear to be hurting Rovio much, either.

Cellphone growth to slow in Q2 2011 due to inventory surplus

According to Garner, a surplus of cellphone inventory will hold back retailers from ordering more from manufacturers in the second quarter of this year. Retailers stocked up after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused fears of shortages.

Amazon updates trade-in program to include phones, tablets

Amazon has announced that it will now accept personal electronics, including cell phones, as part of its trade-in program. Customers can swap their used tablet, cell phone, MP3 player, and more for Amazon gift cards. The values can range anywhere from 25 cents to a few hundred dollars - depending on the item. Once customers have determined the value of their item by finding it and determining its condition, they can print out a pre-paid shipping label. Amazon will inspect the item on receipt, and will add the gift card credit to the account within 48 hours. Rejected items will be sent back to the customer at no cost.

Comcast updates iPhone app with video streaming

Comcast has updated its XFINITY TV iPhone app to take advantage of the video streaming services that were previously only available on the iPad version of the app. The app will only allow video streaming over a Wi-Fi connection, and requires a Comcast cable subscription, naturally. Users can also manage their DVR directly from the app. The Comcast XFINITY TV app for iPhone version 1.5 is free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

OmniVision introduces slimmer CMOS sensor that records 1080p video

OmniVision, a manufacturer of digital imaging devices, has introduced a new 5 megapixel CMOS sensor for phones and tablets that is capable of recording 1080p HD video (1920 x 1080 pixel) at 30 frames per second. The new sensor is 20 percent slimmer than predecessors, a quality that OmniVision claims will allow phone and tablet manufacturers to create slimmer devices.The new sensor is expected to hit mass production in the second half of 2011.

Sprint CEO Hesse says price-hikes necessary to keep unlimited option

Commenting on the recent price-hikes for smartphone data service that were enacted earlier this year, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse admitted that the move was not popular with consumers, though it was necessary. The other option he mentioned, was throttling customers or enacting data caps, something the carrier did not want to do. Sprint also restructured its loyalty programs, lengthening the amount of time before an average customer would be eligible for a new phone upgrade. Despite the changes, Sprint managed to leapfrog T-Mobile in customer satisfaction, and now sits at the top with CDMA rival Verizon Wireless.

LG Optimus 3D Android smartphone headed to Orange UK

A new Android smartphone has appeared on Orange UK's website, the new LG Optimus 3D. The LG Optimus 3D is a 3D-capable smartphone with a massive 4.3-inch, 3D LCD touchscreen display, and two 5 megapixel cameras on the back for 3D video recording. The phone runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor and offers Google's Android 2.2 that will be upgradable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in the future. No specific release date has been announced, but the carrier does indicate that the smartphone will be offered for free with qualifying pay monthly plans.

HTC Sensation dual-core Android smartphone available from Vodafone UK today

As expected, Vodafone is the first UK carrier out of the gate to offer the HTC Sensation, available today. The Sensation is a dual-core, Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone, with HTC's latest version of its Sense UI, complete with a new, live lockscreen. It features an 8 megapixel camera on the back, and has a 4.3-inch, qHD display, with 960 x 540 pixels of resolution. The Sensation is offered for free by Vodafone on monthly plans of 35 GBP or more.

China Mobile has announced that the carrier and Apple have agreed that a new iPhone will use its 4G technology, called TD-LTE. The company claims that talks with Apple are still ongoing, so we are not exactly sure as to what the two companies have agreed to. The carrier does not currently have the iPhone in its lineup

Verizon Wireless 4G LTE now available in 55 markets

As expected, Verizon Wireless has turned on LTE service in a bunch of new markets today. In addition to those areas previously announced, Verizon has added Bryan-College Station and Temple-Killeen, Texas to the mix, as well as beefed up coverage in and around Atlanta, Chicago, and New Orleans. The number of markets covered by 4G LTE service is now up to 55. Big Red has promised that 147 cities will be covered with LTE by the end of 2011, so expect a few more of these announcements as year goes on.

European carriers push for LTE on the 1800MHz band

While North American carriers have been working to deploy 4G LTE service on the 700MHz frequency band for some time now, European carriers have been stalled by waiting for spectrum auctions that will free up the 800MHz and 2.6GHz frequencies for LTE use. In light of this, there has been a push to utilize the currently available 1800MHz band for LTE instead of waiting for the auctions to happen.

Angry Birds hits 200 million download milestone

Rovio's head, Peter Vesterbacka, announced that the ubiquitous bird-flinging game that put the company on the map, Angry Birds, has now been downloaded over 200 million times across the various platforms where it is available. This is taking in to account the three versions of the game: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio. The game is available on iOS, Android, webOS, Symbian, Windows 7, Mac, Google Chrome, and soon Windows Phone 7.
