Apple wants a SIM card smaller than micro-SIM for future iPhones, iPads

According to an Orange UK executive talking to Reuters, Apple has proposed a new SIM card to the European standardization committee for telecoms that is smaller and thinner than the one currently used in the iPhone 4 and iPad.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Acer Iconia Tab A500 to get Android 3.1 next month

According to This Is My Next, ASUS and Acer have confirmed that their respective Android tablets (the Eee Pad Transformer and Iconia Tab A500) will be getting over-the-air upgrades to Android 3.1 Honeycomb early next month. Android 3.1 offers a number of improvements over 3.0, including faster performance and various UI tweaks. The Motorola XOOM was the first tablet to receive the update when it started rolling out last week. LG and T-Mobile have not provided a date for when the G-Slate tablet will get the upgrade, though they did say it was "coming soon."

Verizon Wireless brings LTE to Southern Connecticut on May 19

Verizon Wireless has just added to the list of areas that will be getting 4G LTE coverage this week with the announcement that both New Haven and Fairfield counties in Connecticut will have 4G service starting on May 19. Towns such as Greenwich, Stamford, Fairfield, Norwalk, New Haven, Waterbury, and more will be able to bask in the 4G speeds that LTE offers.

Android security vulnerability exposes Google logins on public Wi-Fi networks

According to a new study done by researchers at the University of Ulm in Germany, 99.7 percent of Android phones and tablets have a security vulnerability that is exposed when they are connected to an open Wi-Fi network. This loophole could allow a malicious user access to personal data or information.

Apple likely hiring Sprint iPhone engineer

Apple recently posted an advert for a "carrier engineer" that would be located near Overland Park, Kansas - home to Sprint Nextel. The posting has recently been updated to say Cupertino, California - perhaps in an attempt to cover up the Sprint connection. The ad says the candidate would be responsible for day-to-day technical interactions with one or more carriers to track down issues reported by the carrier and would involve working directly with program management, software development, and the test team to get products approved by the carriers. The new Apple job posting adds fuel to the fire that Apple will launch the iPhone 4S for Sprint and T-Mobile in the USA.

HTC EVO 3D up for pre-order at RadioShack, release date still unknown

Despite not knowing the exact release date of Sprint and HTC's next flagship phone, the EVO 3D, you can now place a pre-order for the dual-core, 3D-displaying Android 2.3 smartphone at RadioShack. The promotion is unadvertised, and available only in store, but if you ask real nicely, the 'Shack will let you put $50 down to reserve the EVO 3D, which you will get in the form of a RadioShack gift card that can be used towards the purchase price of the phone when it does eventually hit shelves.

Verizon 4G LTE LG Revolution smartphone could launch May 26

We haven't heard too much about the 4G LTE-capable LG Revolution since its announcement at CES this January, but if a stock listing from Best Buy is correct, it could be launching as soon as May 26. The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY has been announced for that date, and it is rumored that the Motorola DROID X2 will be released then as well. Verizon Wireless has yet to make any news regarding the LG Revolution official.

O2 UK wireless network down in London, South East

O2's wireless network is down in both parts of London and the South East according to the carrier. According to a company statement, there is "no estimated time for this to be fixed, however we're working on getting our network up and running as soon as possible and expect it to be today." The outage is being blamed on theft and vandalism. The outage has been going on since late last night.

Each of these companies are now "Sponsor" level members of the Wi-Fi Alliance, and have representatives on the board of the organization.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY launch for Vodafone NZ delayed thanks to thieves

This story sounds almost too crazy to be true, but according to Vodafone NZ, the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY gaming smartphone will be delayed because thieves have stolen the entire first shipment of the device. Vodafone is rightfully calling this a major security breach. No word on when the PLAY will actually be released now. If you happen to be in New Zealand and someone offers to sell you an Xperia PLAY, there is a good chance that it is an "off-the-back-of-a-truck" sort of deal.

Apple, Google head back to the Senate to talk about location data again

Representatives from both Apple and Google will be headed back to Washington to talk about location data again in a second U.S. Senate hearing on the matter. The two companies had appeared in a U.S. Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing last week to discuss mobile phone data privacy. Joining the two companies will be a representative from Facebook as well. The U.S. Department of Justice will not be present at this second hearing. The Senate hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. EST on May 19.

NVIDIA CEO says Android tablets will overtake Apple, has vested interest

NVIDIA's CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, has made claims that he feels that Android tablets will eventually overtake Apple tablets in the marketplace, spurred on by advances in chip designs and software innovations. Of course, NVIDIA stands to make a lot of money if this turns out to be the case, as NVIDIA processors currently power the majority of big-name Android tablets on the market.

Vizio smartphone shows up in FCC, sports AT&T 3G

TV maker Vizio showed off some Android smartphones and tablets earlier this year at CES in Las Vegas, and now it looks at though it may be getting closer to making some available for purchase. The Vizio VPHN1044G smartphone recently passed through the FCC and is seen sporting 850/1900MHz GSM and WCDMA bands II and V, which indicates it would be compatible with AT&T. The device in the FCC filing appears to be the Vizio Phone, which features a zippy 1GHz processor powering Google's Android operating system, a massive 4-inch LCD screen with HDMI-out support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and dual cameras. No word yet on pricing or availability, of course.

T-Mobile possibly readying new data plans

A leaked T-Mobile internal document is showing that the wireless carrier appears to be preparing to offer new data plans for its magenta-colored customers. The four purported monthly options are $10 for 200MB, $20 for 2GB, $30 for 5GB, and $60 for 10GB. I guess we will have to wait until May 22 to get the official announcement - or not, since this is all unofficial.

Samsung Exhibit 4G smartphone for T-Mobile expected to land on June 8

According to a leaked internal document, T-Mobile is readying a new 4G smartphone, the Samsung Exhibit 4G. The device is expected to offer users a speedy 1GHz Hummingbird processor to power Google's Android operating system. The device also is expected to feature support for T-Mobile's 21Mbps HSPA+ network and offer a 3 megapixel camera/camcorder and VGA user-facing camera for video chatting.

LG Optimus 2X getting software update to fix nagging bugs

Good news for LG Optimus 2X owners in Europe, as LG has made it known that a software fix to resolve many of the annoying bugs and issues with the dual-core powered smartphone is coming soon. The software update will fix random freezes and reboots when the phone is charging, the power button is pressed to wake it up, or when the phone is in stand-by mode. LG was not clear as to when the update will arrive exactly, but it is presumed that the update will hit unlocked and unbranded phones first, before being deployed by carriers. No word on whether this will be released for the Optimus 2X's sister phone, the T-Mobile G2x, in the U.S.

Starbucks to offer mobile orders and Android app soon

According to an executive from coffee giant Starbucks, the company is getting ready to launch some new mobile offerings. K.C. MacLaren, director of mobile and emerging platforms, has hinted that the company is "in process" of finalizing apps for Google's Android operating system. Currently Starbucks offers mobile apps to iPhone and BlackBerry users, which allows customers to pay for their coffee addictions directly from their mobiles. MacLaren also shared some news that the company is tinkering with the idea of customers being able to place drink orders directly from their mobiles, "We know how to do it, the question is: Does it create the behavior in the customer we really want?" he said."
