Google Nexus S 4G already hit with a maintenance update Posted: 09 May 2011 01:35 PM PDT The Google Nexus S 4G has been officially available from Sprint for one day now, and already there is a software maintenance fix being pushed out to users. The update is being delivered over-the-air, and includes fixes for international roaming with Google Voice and the NFC tags app when used between two Nexus S devices. Improved performance and security is listed in the changelog as well. Users should be notified when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed. Read the full story here. |
Google Goggles for Android updated with sharing tools and more Posted: 09 May 2011 01:08 PM PDT Google has released version 1.4 of its Goggles image recognition app for Android, which adds some new features and refines others. An enhanced search history is now available that lets you add notes to your image search and then share that image search with others. Google has also implemented a tool that allows users to suggest better results for image searches. Business card recognition and interpretation is said to be improved as well. Google Goggles 1.4 is free and available in the Android Market now. It requires Android 1.6 Donut or higher. Read the full story here. |
Huawei may win first UK phone equipment order Posted: 09 May 2011 12:41 PM PDT China's leading phone manufacturer, Huawei, is well on its way to announcing a wireless network order from the UK joint venture Everything Everywhere, in collaboration with Deutsche Telekom AG and France Telecom SA, according to two people with knowledge of the situation. The two also mentioned that the deal may be announced on May 9, marking the first major wireless win for Huawei in the UK. After attempting to build out a wireless network in the London Tube system before the 2012 Olympics, Huawei had agreed to donate the equipment from the scrapped project as part of the deal. Verizon offering Rdio streaming music app in V CAST app store Posted: 09 May 2011 12:20 PM PDT Verizon Wireless has announced the availability of the Rdio streaming music app in its V CAST store on Android smartphones. Rdio offers users a catalog of over 8.5 million songs that can be streamed on demand. Users can also share and discover new music with their friends. Verizon users who download Rdio from the V CAST store will get a free 7-day trial of the service, after which they will have to pay $9.99 per month if they wish to continue using it. Samsung Replenish "green" smartphone now available from Sprint Posted: 09 May 2011 11:45 AM PDT As expected, Sprint has put the Samsung Replenish up for sale. The Replenish the is the first eco-focused smartphone in Sprint's lineup, and is comprised of 82 percent recyclable materials. The packaging is also mostly made from recycled materials, and is recyclable itself. The Replenish has a portrait QWERTY keyboard positioned below a 2.8-inch, QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) touchscreen. It has Android 2.2 Froyo and is powered by a 600MHz processor. A special Green ID pack is available to customize the device with green news and tips. The Replenish is available in blue or black and costs $49.99 with a new two-year agreement. Sprint is also discounting the data service on the Replenish by $10 for the life of the contract. Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet available from Sprint now Posted: 09 May 2011 11:16 AM PDT As promised, Sprint has started carrying the Motorola XOOM Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet, though it is the Wi-Fi-only edition. Customers can head over to Sprint's site now to pick up the tablet for $599.99, without any contract or data plan requirement. NVIDIA acquires Icera, launches two-pronged attack on mobile industry Posted: 09 May 2011 10:38 AM PDT NVIDIA today announced an agreement to acquire baseband processor maker Icera, which helps develop 3G and 4G data networks used by phones and tablets. The $367 million cash acquisition is expected to reach completion in 30 days. When the companies combine, they will be able to offer both application and baseband processors, which will help manufacturers deliver products to market faster and meet the requirements of next-generation mobile computing. Plus, by offering two main processors, NVIDIA will have about doubled its revenue opportunity per device. Furthermore, this acquisition will allow NVIDIA to invade territory currently dominated by Qualcomm, dividing NVIDIA's attack on mobile into two fronts: processors and radios. Mobile phones foster jealousy among Indian newlyweds; state responds Posted: 09 May 2011 09:04 AM PDT The Punjab State Commission for Women in India has issued an official advisory asking newlywed brides to focus on their domestic duties rather than have long conversations on their mobile phones, as it could foster jealousy in their husbands. Commission head Kaur Sangha explained to AFP that the advisory was meant to keep new couples close and bonded during the transition into adult and married life, and keep suspicion out of the home. MapQuest brings SkyHook location system to Android Posted: 09 May 2011 08:17 AM PDT MapQuest has released the first Android navigation system to utilize SkyHook's unique, Wi-Fi based positioning system with the latest version of its app. SkyHook allows users to get a location signal when GPS is blocked by being indoors or among tall buildings. SkyHook uses Wi-Fi signals to triangulate the user's position when GPS does not work. It combines the two sets of data to get a faster lock as well. MapQuest's navigation app uses voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions and offers traffic information as well as local searches. That 3 million comprises the 120,000 units pre-ordered by South Korean Samsung-loyalists, plus the unreleased number of pre-orders flowing in from other countries such as the UK. For those who are still unfamiliar, the Samsung Galaxy S II is one of the most powerful smartphones on the market, rivaled only by the LG Optimus 2X, the Motorola ATRIX 4G, and the upcoming HTC Sensation, all of which also sport a dual-core processor under the hood. It features an enormous, 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with 800 x 480 pixels of resolution. Despite the massive screen, it is only 8.99mm thick at its thinnest point, and 9.24mm at it thickest. It also weighs only 139g. Powered by a 1.2GHz single-core processor, the INFUSE 4G has Android 2.2 Froyo at its core, with Samsung's TouchWiz interface on top. Watch the video here. |

Twitter for iOS now forces use of t.co URL shortener Posted: 09 May 2011 05:53 AM PDT The latest version of the official Twitter app for iOS, 3.3.4, has a surprising new change: the ability to designate the URL shortener of your choice has been removed, and the app will only use Twitter's own t.co shortener. It is assumed that Twitter has decided to force users to utilize its own shortener so that it can easily display full links in the app when a user tweets a shortened link. Most users probably will not notice or care, but those who relied on the greater analytics support of sites like bit.ly will find this new feature quite annoying and will probably be looking for a new Twitter app on their iPhone or iPad.
