Twitter refreshes mobile site for smartphones to look like the app Posted: 12 May 2011 04:56 AM PDT Twitter has pushed a major update to the mobile version of its website for iOS and Android users that modernizes the look and takes advantage of the more capable browsers on those platforms. Apple's iPad not hurting PC sales as much as originally thought Posted: 12 May 2011 04:27 AM PDT According to a new study done by NPD, Apple's iPad tablet is not having as large effect on low-end PC sales as was originally thought. Login to Facebook is now included within the app. Groupon HD brings the same functionality as the original web version for deals in over 170 citiies nationwide and allows users the ability to buy, access, find, and redeem groupons direct from their iPads. Android Market now has content filtering for parents, prudes Posted: 11 May 2011 01:14 PM PDT Google just keeps rolling out the updates to the Android Market today, as it has now been revealed that a new content filtering option has been added to the client on Android phones and tablets. Parents can now filter apps by rating, selecting from "Everyone" all the way up to "High Maturity". A PIN can then be set so that it requires a password to change the filter. It looks like Steve Jobs will have one less criticism of the Android Market now, as it will be much harder for children to find nefarious apps. One of our Android phones has already received the new market, while another has not, so it appears to be a gradual rollout. Read the full story here. |
HTC Trophy for Verizon shows up for order at Best Buy Posted: 11 May 2011 01:10 PM PDT The HTC Trophy, long rumored to be the first Windows Phone 7 device for Verizon Wireless, but never announced, has shown up for order on Best Buy's website. The Trophy has the standard WP7 hardware requirements: 1GHz Snapdragon processor, WVGA touchscreen, and 5 megapixel camera with dedicated camera key. Best Buy's listing does not have the on-contract price, but it does peg the phone at $599.99 full retail. Rumors are that the Trophy will be announced tomorrow, so we should find out soon enough. HP Veer 4G webOS smartphone to be free at Best Buy Posted: 11 May 2011 12:46 PM PDT According to PreCentral, Best Buy will be offering the HP Veer 4G webOS smartphone for free at launch. The big box retailer will only be carrying the white version of the pint-size device. Pre-orders can apparently be placed, though they require a $50 deposit to be put down (refunded as a $50 Best Buy gift card at time of purchase). AT&T has announced that it will sell the Veer 4G for $99.99, so free is a pretty solid deal. The smartphone is expected to hit shelves on May 15. Read the full story here. |

Android apps can now be 4GB in size, specific devices can be excluded Posted: 11 May 2011 11:42 AM PDT Google has announced a bit of news regarding Android apps that should make some developers happy. The limit for app sizes in the Android Market has been raised from 50MB to 4GB, allowing much larger app packages. Users will just download the entire app directly, as opposed to downloading a large file the first time they open the app. Developers can also exclude specific devices from being able to install their apps, useful if they want to limit the app to higher-end phones and tablets. Google sets aside $500 million for ad settlement dispute Posted: 11 May 2011 06:51 AM PDT Google has announced that it has put aside $500 million to potentially settle an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice into the use of Google ads by certain advertisers. Google has not specified exactly what part of its advertising system that the DoJ is investigating, though the company stated "we believe it will not have a material adverse effect on our business, consolidated financial position, results of operations, or cash flows." This comes only a day after Google and Apple appeared before a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss privacy issues and the use of personal location data coming from the two companies' smartphones. The 10.1 tablets are special editions, too, with a custom white rear cover adorned with the Android logo. The rest of us poor sods will have to wait another month or so before we can plunk down our hard earned cash for a non-special edition Samsung tablet when the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is due to hit stores. Motorola Milestone 2 receives software update Posted: 11 May 2011 06:27 AM PDT Motorola is pushing a software update out for the Milestone 2 in Europe that brings the software up to version 2.4.24. The Milestone 2 is the European version of the DROID 2 for Verizon Wireless in the U.S. The new software update is said to improve phone and call stability and performance, have better security, and includes the latest versions of Google's core apps like Gmail and Maps. Vodafone and O2 users in Germany can download the update over-the-air, while UK, France, Austria, and Switzerland based users will have to utilize Motorola's Software Update service to upgrade their phones.
