Western Union intros iPhone, iPad app for mobile money transfers

Western Union has announced that it is offering a new app to Apple iOS users that allows money transfers to be made directly from iOS mobile devices. The app allows users to use a debit or credit card to easily send money to recipients, and the funds will be available for pickup at more than 400,000 Western Union agent locations throughout the U.S. The new app is free and is available now for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users in the App Store.

T-Mobile now offering free Wi-Fi calling

T-Mobile today confirmed with GigaOm that Wi-Fi/UMA based calls made by T-Mobile customers are now completely free. As such, a user with Wi-Fi calling capable phones, like Samsung's Galaxy S 4G, can talk all day and all night as long as their phone is connected to a Wi-Fi access point - and not one minute will be deducted from their monthly contract bucket. This new, free service is called "Free Wi-Fi Calling" and must be added to an account before users can enjoy the extra minutes.

Samsung postpones May 24 event without explanation

Samsung USA had previously sent out a "save the date" email notice for a planned event on May 24 in New York City. Speculation on what the event was to feature ranged from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet to Samsung's Galaxy S II smartphone. In any case, the event has been postponed as of this afternoon with no new date provided. We were told to expect more information soon.

Evidence, speculation of Motorola DROID X2 launch surfaces

A number of bits and pieces of information about an upcoming Motorola DROID X2 for Verizon Wireless have surfaced recently. A user manual for the device was found, posted, and then removed. TG Daily even went so far as to definitively say that the DROID X2 was being announced on May 26, though it provided absolutely no information on its sources. We've also seen some indications that the original DROID X was to get a Gingerbread update soon, but that it has been possibly postponed due to the X2 version shipping with Android 2.2 Froyo, though this is all highly speculative.

Here is a demo of the new music application for Android smartphones. Google released the app this week to coincide with the beta launch of its new Google Music service, which this application supports. Even without Google Music, the new app offers many improvements over the old music player that we have been using until now. The app is available in the Android Market.

AT&T rolling out updates that enable sideloading on Android phones

A report has come in that AT&T is pushing out updates to certain Android phones that enable side-loading of applications. The update is said to be rolling out today to users of the HTC Aria, Inspire 4G, and the Samsung Captivate. The new Samsung Infuse 4G already has this feature enabled. Notably missing from the list is the Motorola ATRIX 4G, another Android 2.2 Froyo smartphone on AT&T. The ability to side-load apps is necessary in order to use the Amazon Appstore, something that AT&T users have not been able to do until now.

Verizon Wireless to turn on LTE for a number of new markets on May 19

Verizon Wireless has just announced that a number of new markets will be able to benefit from 4G LTE service starting on May 19. Included in the list of markets now covered are Montgomery and Mobile, Ala.; Denver, Colo.; Gainesville, Pensacola, and Tallahassee, Fla.; Fayetteville-Lumberton, N.C.; and a number of areas surrounding Philadelphia, PA.

The Sensation 4G is a hotly-anticipated smartphone with a dual-core, 1.2GHz processor and a 4.3-inch, qHD resolution display. HTC ThunderBolt inductive charger waltzes through the FCC

Owners of the HTC ThunderBolt will be getting an easier way to handle their frequent battery recharges, as an inductive charging rear cover for the Verizon LTE smartphone has appeared in the FCC's database. The inductive backplate had appeared on Verizon Wireless' website briefly in April, though it was pulled rather quickly, maybe because it didn't have government approval just yet. Regardless, we should be seeing this accessory hit shelves in the near future, hopefully for not much more than the $39 price we saw listed in April.

Three UK has announced the addition of the Android-powered HTC Flyer. Three expects users to take delivery around May 27 for those that pre-order the device. The Flyer is a 7-inch tablet that runs Google's Android operating system and offers 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and some compelling HTC services such as Scribe and OnLive's on-demand gaming services. An analyst for Jefferies & Co. is making claims that the next iPhone to come out of Cupertino will not be an iPhone 5, but rather a revised version of the current iPhone 4, with a new processor, better cameras, and HSPA+ support. Sony Ericsson drops lawsuit after Clearwire claims no plans for a smartphone

Sony Ericsson has announced that it is dropping its lawsuit against Clearwire, which claimed design infringement on Sony Ericsson's logo. The change in hearty comes after Clearwire made it clear that it was not going to produce a smartphone, which it had previously announced plans to do. Sony Ericsson had sued Clearwire, claiming that Clearwire's logo was confusingly similar to Sony Ericsson's. Clearwire testified in court that it had no plans to release a smartphone, which alleviated Sony Ericsson's concerns and prompted the dropping of the lawsuit.

Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone hit with two software updates

The still-new Samsung Galaxy S II has received two updates to fix some bugs that were present in the shipping builds of the phone. The firmware updates fix connectivity issues, automatic brightness, and improves performance with the Swype on-screen keyboard. Both are installed using Samsung's PC-based Kies desktop software and are available now.
