Movies are available to watch in the browser or in the new app that is arriving with Android 3.1 Honeycomb. Smartphones should see an app available in the next few weeks. Prices start at $1.99 per movie, though most blockbusters are $3.99. The rental period lasts for 24 hours. Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich launched for smartphones Posted: 10 May 2011 09:39 AM PDT Google has just taken the wraps off of the next version of its Android operating system, named Ice Cream Sandwich. Ice Cream Sandwich is designed to work across a variety of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and whatever else the company can conjure up. There are new APIs that allow for scalability between different size devices. Google claims it has a state-of-the-art UI and will feature some interesting new features that use the camera. Apple and Google appearing at Senate hearing now; webcast available Posted: 10 May 2011 08:27 AM PDT Google and Apple are both appearing before a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee this morning regarding privacy issues relating to the collection of smartphone user location data. The location data privacy issue came to a head when it became widely known that Apple's iOS devices were keeping logs of their locations, sometimes for months at a time, and that the files were unencrypted and even transferred to personal computers running Apple's iTunes. Possible Google Music launch today at I/O Posted: 10 May 2011 08:07 AM PDT Google's I/O developer conference take place today. An announcement of the launch of the new Google Music services is expected to be made today at the conference keynote speech, which takes place at 9 a.m. Pacific time (1 p.m. Eastern). According to multiple sources, Google has yet to secure deals with the 4 major music publishing houses. As such, we are expecting to see the service launch as a remote hard drive, of sorts, that can stream a user's own music to compatible devices. Apple iPad gets New Yorker magazine thanks to Conde Nast deal Posted: 10 May 2011 06:03 AM PDT As expected, Apple and Conde Nast have announced a deal that puts the New Yorker magazine on Apple's tablet. Conde Nast had pushed for some new terms for content providers on Apple's platform, and won on a few fronts. Apple had been forcing content providers to sell subscriptions outside of the iTunes App Store for the same price as within the store, but now Conde Nast intends to offer more valuable bundles outside the store. Apple is still taking a 30 percent cut of subscriptions signed up through the app, though now purchasers are directed by a prompt to sign up for more online content through Conde Nast once they purchase the subscription. This deal opens the way for more publishers, some of which have been hesitant to make deals with Apple, to break into the digital platform. Read the full story here. |
