Apple blasts Star Wars app out of App Store Posted: 29 Mar 2011 01:43 PM PDT Star Wars junkies only have two days left to play THQ Wireless's Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner on their iPhones, as the title is getting yanked from the App Store on Thursday. The app's designer, Josh Shabta, claims that the company's license with Lucasfilm is "winding down," which means that the Star Wars title must go. Shabta speculates in his blog-post on the matter that all Star Wars iOS games are facing the same Thursday deadline. Shabta also mentioned plans for possible Android and iPad 2 versions of his Star Wars game, but it seems those dreams are dying along with the presence of Star Wars in the App Store. NY Attorney General piles on, frowns on AT&T, T-Mobile deal Posted: 29 Mar 2011 12:40 PM PDT It looks like New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has jumped in line behind Sprint and other government officials opposing the AT&T/T-Mobile deal, saying in an email statement that the proposed $39 billion acquisition will undergo a "thorough review." Schneiderman's main concerns lie in New York's outlying cities, such as Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, and Syracuse, where wireless carrier options may be more limited than in the Big Apple. Schneiderman also expressed concerns regarding T-Mobile customers who found the number-four carrier to be a convenient and necessary "low-cost option." "Affordable wireless service and technology, including smartphones and next generation handheld devices, are the bridge to the digital broadband future," said Schneiderman. "We want to ensure all New Yorkers benefit from these important innovations that improve their lives." AT&T originally announced the buyout on March 20, at which point Sprint, the FCC, and even Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar all fell into line to express their opposition to the deal. Vimeo launches video-editing app to rival YouTube Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:34 AM PDT A new app from video-sharing site Vimeo is joining the Apple App Store today, just a few years later than its competitor YouTube's app became available. Perhaps, waiting so long was wise, as Vimeo needs to knock this one out of the ballpark in order to compete effectively. The Vimeo app offers access to Vimeo's library of videos, but what truly differentiates the app from YouTube is the ability to record, edit and, and upload videos to the Vimeo service from an iPhone. After downloading the app and signing up/logging in to your Vimeo account, the app will already have any of your uploaded Vimeo videos already present inside the app. From there, you'll be able to shoot video from within the app or load pre-existing videos from the iPhone. The Recordings tab offers a pretty barebones video editor, which offers the ability to combine video clips, add simple titles and text to the clip, create transitions, and add a soundtrack. The Vimeo app is only available on the iPhone 3GS and 4, iPod touch (4th gen) and the iPad 2, and can be downloaded on the Apple App Store for free. Read the full story here. |
Vodafone lists HTC Wildfire S in two new colors Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:28 AM PDT In the grey of winter, sometimes it's nice to get a whiff of some color headed our way. Vodafone is making it happen, at least overseas, for those interested in HTC's Wildfire S. On its newly refreshed "Coming Soon" page, the carrier lists the HTC Wildfire S as being available in two new colors exclusively from Vodafone: grey and purple. So, maybe a grey phone won't add any vibrance to your winter, but maybe it'll add a much-needed sleek factor to your look. I expect the purple version will go over well with the ladies, and a few in-touch gentlemen. In any case, if you're in search of an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone that stands out from the rest, Vodafone has what you need. Read the full story here. |
Nokia still dreams big for Symbian, despite Microsoft deal Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:12 AM PDT Despite its current deal with Microsoft, Nokia still has big dreams for its Symbian platform. In a letter to developers, Purnima Kochikar, VP of Nokia Forum and Developer Community, outlines the reasons why developers shouldn't abandon Symbian and the Qt developer framework. Kochikar promises a "strong portfolio" of new Symbian products to be released by Nokia during its transition phase (2011-1012), with "GHz+" processing and faster graphics speeds. Kochikar also promises an over-the-air update that will focus on user experience, delivering a new home screen, new icons, a faster browser, new Navbar, and a revamped look and feel to Ovi Store and Ovi Maps, which includes social media integration. The letter also hinted that Nokia will most likely continue to support the Symbian platform after the WP7 smartphone takeover, as Symbian is still the leading smartphone platform in booming markets such as China, India, Russia, and Turkey. Windows Phone 7 could take number 2 smartphone OS spot by 2015 Posted: 29 Mar 2011 08:55 AM PDT Industry analyst company IDC has predicted that Windows Phone 7 will be the second most popular smartphone OS worldwide by 2015, right behind Android. IDC calculates that Windows Phone 7 will wholly take over Symbian's current marketshare of 20.9 percent in the wake of the deal between Nokia and Microsoft, which would be enough to slot it in the number two spot. Android is poised to become the most popular smartphone OS worldwide this year, passing Symbian and pushing Apple's iOS to third place. Read the full story here. |

Sony Ericsson to offer Xperia Android smartphone bootloader unlock tool Posted: 29 Mar 2011 08:12 AM PDT Sony Ericsson has announced that it will release a tool that allows the bootloader on its 2011 Android smartphones to be unlocked, allowing the installation of custom ROMs and other modifications. This is at the request of developers and users who would like to have more control over their phones. Use of the tool will certainly void the warranty, and those who do use it may have to pay a special fee if Sony Ericsson has to do work on the phone afterwards. The tool will only work on unlocked and unbranded handsets, though, so its going to be a bit more of a struggle to load a custom ROM on the Xperia PLAY coming out for Verizon Wireless.
