iOS 4.3 hackers reveal iPhone 5 may sport dual-core A5 processor

According to some eagle-eyed code-monkeys, there are references to a new iOS device in the code of iOS 4.3, which was released this week. These references point to the possibility that the next iPhone to come from Apple could have a dual-core A5 processor inside.

Verizon Wireless brings suit against Premium SMS fraudsters

Verizon Wireless has filed a lawsuit against purported Premium SMS fraudsters this week. It is accusing the defendants of illicitly registering customers up for Premium SMS services, which add monthly subscription charges to the customers' wireless bills. The lawsuit asks for an immediate court injunction to stop the activities as well as monetary compensation. Android gets official Read It Later application

Popular offline caching service Read It Later has finally released an official Android application. Similar in aesthetics and functionality to the iOS app, the Android version lets users save websites as articles to be read at a later time. The app will format the article for easy readability, with the option to view the full webpage if desired. One if the benefits of Read It Later is that it does not need an active internet connection to browse articles that have already been saved. The application is now available in the Android Market and is on sale for US$0.99 for a limited time.

IDC: Android dominates European market, may surpass iOS

According to research firm IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, Android dominated the Western European mobile phone market in 2010, seeing 1,580 percent year-over-year sales growth, which rounds out to be almost 7.5 million more units sold in 2010 than in the previous year. Android devices from developers such as HTC, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung were also the most advertised smartphones of the quarter, accompanied by Apple's iPhone 4, of course.

FCC spills Nokia C7's T-Mobile secret

Nokia's C7 smartphone hit the FCC this week, leaving a trail of clues as to which carrier might land the handset. All signs point to T-Mobile USA at the moment, since the instructional manual for the Nokia C7 didn't leave much room for speculation. In the MyAccount section, the manual states, "If you have questions about billing or about using this service, contact T-Mobile." The same informative advice was repeated in the section concerning Wi-Fi calling. The Nokia C7, rumored to release as the Nokia "Tiger," has a 3.5-inch touch-screen, 8GB of internal storage with microSD expansion, and an 8.0 megapixel camera and HD video recording.

Nokia Siemens Networks clarifies acquisition of Motorola networks

Nokia Siemens Networks has clarified its acquisition of Motorola network properties that started in July of 2010. The acquisition has been delayed by the Ministry of Commerce in China and by an injunction by Huawei that claims intellectual property infringement. It is still pending anti-trust approval. Nokia Siemens has affirmed its commitment to the acquisition, but does not give a date as to when it expects it to be completed.

iOS 4.3 now available for iPhone, iPad

Coinciding with today's update for iTunes, Apple has released iOS 4.3 for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad a couple of days earlier than expected. iOS 4.3 promises a faster browsing experience in Safari, as well as iTunes Home Sharing support, which allows streaming of media from a PC or Mac to an iOS device. It also adds Personal Hotspot functionality for GSM iPhone 4 models (AT&T), which was originally introduced on the Verizon iPhone. The update is free and available in iTunes now, and it's unclear when it will be available for Verizon's iPhone 4, which still runs iOS 4.2.6.

Sprint CEO confirms commitment to Clearwire

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has confirmed Sprint's commitment to its partnership with Clearwire in providing WiMAX services. This is a different stance than was taken last week when Hesse had implied that Sprint could break free from Clearwire. Sprint and Clearwire currently have a wholesale networking agreement, and Sprint owns a majority share of Clearwire.

Samsung teases possible 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab Android tablet on Facebook

Samsung Mobile posted a photo on its Facebook page this morning teasing the newest, and yet unrevealed, Samsung Galaxy Tab. On February 28, Samsung released its first Galaxy Tab teaser with an indistinct photo of the device with the tag: "What's your Tab life?" followed by the code "78910." With 7-inch and 10-inch versions of the Galaxy Tab already "unpacked," it seems like Samsung is hinting at a new 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab, which is expected to debut at CTIA on March 22 in Orlando, FL. The photo can be found on Samsung Mobile's Facebook page.

Google Voice confirmed for XOOM and other Honeycomb tablets

Google has confirmed, via its Google Voice forums, that it will launch a Google Voice client for Honeycomb tablets. The current version of Google Voice for Android does not appear in the Android Market when browsed from a Honeycomb device such as the Motorola XOOM, and it crashes when it is side-loaded on to the tablet. While many Honeycomb tablets will likely lack a phone radio for making calls, Google Voice can be useful for sending and receiving SMS messages and managing voicemails.

Samsung Galaxy Tab with WiBro support shipping in South Korea

Samsung is shipping a version of its 7-inch Galaxy Tab with support for WiBro networks in South Korea. The device was launched on KT, which offers WiBro connectivity in 82 cities, and Chosun Ilbo, a Korean newspaper, said Samsung launched the device at a power price point than the 3G model. WiBro is a Korean wireless broadband service based on mobile WiMAX technology. Other hardware features, including a 4,00mAh battery, 16GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot, remain unchanged.

HP to put webOS on every PC in 2012

HP's new CEO, Leo Apotheker, today announced that HP's webOS operating system will also run on every PC shipped by HP, along with Microsoft's Windows OS. HP acquired the webOS operating system after the acquisition of smartphone developer Palm for $1.2 billion last year.

O2 UK to offer Alcatel One Touch Android smartphones

O2 UK is adding Alcatel One Touch devices to its lineup of Android smartphones. The Alcatel One Touch 355 QWERTY and the One Touch 708 both run Android 2.2 Froyo with a custom interface on top. The One Touch 355 QWERTY features a full keyboard and a VGA camera while the One Touch 708 offers a full touchscreen experience and steps up to a 1.3 megapixel camera. Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.

HP drops price of Palm Pre 2 yet again - now free

Just two days after dropping the price of the Palm Pre 2 on Verizon down to $29.99 with a two-year agreement, HP has now brought the price down to the low, low amount of free. Verizon is still selling the Pre 2 for $149.99 with a two-year contract, but we imagine that it will be dropping the price soon as well. Pricing like this can only mean one thing, wait for the HP Pre 3 if you can.

Citing breaches in its terms and conditions, GetJar encouraged users to download other browsers that are still available in its market, such as Bolt, Dolphin, or Layar. GetJar has just over 140,000 applications available for Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and more.

Apple iTunes updated to 10.2.1 for security fix

Apple has issued an update to its latest version of iTunes that was released last week, bringing the version to 10.2.1. This update does not add any new features, but rather addresses some security issues and unnamed bugs. Version 10.2 introduced compatibility with iOS 4.3 and improved home sharing between iOS devices. The update is available now via Apple's software download page or software update.

Nokia reaffirms commitment to Symbian for smartphones

Nokia has reaffirmed its commitment to selling Symbian handsets over the next two years as it completes its transition to the Windows Phone 7 platform. Symbian has long powered Nokia's smartphone devices and it appears that there will be Symbian powered phones alongside the newer Windows Phone 7 devices when they are introduced. An agreement has been struck between Microsoft and Nokia to produces Windows Phone 7 handsets, although Nokia executives have stated that a final contract has not yet been signed.

Twitter for iPhone, iPad updated in response to user complaints

In response to user complaints regarding the new Quick Bar that was introduced with last week's update to the official Twitter application for iOS, Twitter has released another update that modifies the Quick Bar's behavior. Previously, the Quick Bar would overlap the time-line, covering up portions of the most recent tweets. This has caused quite a backlash and much complaining by users of the popular application. The new update resolves this problem and fixes other minor bugs that were introduced. The update is free and is available now from Apple iTunes.
