Judge rules for Apple in Nokia patent suit

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 04:01 AM PDT

Apple won a U.S. trade ruling against Nokia Oyi over patent infringement on mobile phone technology. An International Trade Commission judge deemed that Apple was not in violation of five of Nokia's patents. Judge James Gildea's findings will be subject to review by the ITC in the near future. This isn't the first time we've seen Nokia and Apple squabble over intellectual licensing rights, as the two powerhouse phone makers have been wrapped up in litigation since October 2009. Nokia drew first blood, accusing Apple of 10 different patent violations and demanding royalties for the millions of iPhones sold since its 2007 launch. The patents in question are related to cameras, battery life, touchscreens, speakers, and messaging.

HTC Inspire 4G can turn on HSUPA radio now thanks to FCC

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 11:15 AM PDT

The Federal Communications Commission has issued a set of documents that state the HSUPA radio currently in the HTC Inspire 4G Android smartphone for AT&T can now be activated. An HSUPA radio is capable of uploading data at speeds of up to 6Mbps, according to claims by AT&T. The radio, while always present in the Inspire, was not active in shipping units due to AT&T claiming that its network could not support the faster upload speeds. We saw this borne out in our full review of the Inspire 4G, where the best upload speeds we could achieve were 114Kbps, much lower than expected from a supposed "4G" device. In fact, this was slower than many 3G devices on AT&T. Now that the FCC has cleared the way, the ball is entirely in AT&T's court to flip the switch on the HSUPA radio.
